Happy New Year

As 2016 draws to a close, I thought I’d take a look back at my most pinned projects from the year. I notice that a lot of them are Paper Pumpkin alternates which I was going to remove from my list since people it suggests that people specifically look for alternates, but they are still cards that I made and were very popular. I was also interested to see that projects I made with the Detailed Floral Thinlits dies featured highly bearing in mind the number that I’m showing. Starting with the least pinned of my most pinned we have one of my personal favourites, a card I made for my brother’s birthday featuring the Swirly Scribbles Thinlits dies. Here’s one that I put together pretty quickly, I really liked the simplicity of it and it appears that a lot of other people did too.

The final three all have been pinned over 600 times, which is humbling and amazing to me.

And here’s my most pinned card, currently with 691 pins. This was using supplies from March’s paper pumpkin.

Swirly Scribbles for CAS Colours & Sketches

Good morning. Once again we’re up to Thursday in the week which means a new challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. This week it’s my very first time hosting a challenge as a member of the design team and although I planned to make my card before setting the challenge, in typical “just in time delivery” fashion, I completed my card last night. I’d been trying a different idea but yesterday morning thought that Swirly Scribbles would be the way and last night after work, that’s what I used.

And here’s the banner showing the three blues that I chose:

Challenging? Yes. But I think, definitely fun. I kept wanting to add a pop of a different colour (not allowed) so this took some thought but I’m extra happy that what I ended up with was a masculine birthday card.

It’s a fairly simple card to put together once you’ve cut out your three swirly scribbles in the three colours being careful not to lose any of the cut out pieces. I started by laying it out on scrap paper so that I could decide exactly how I was going to fill in the spaces. It changed between the scrap paper and the final card! Once I had that decided, I placed the night of navy outline onto the card to get the placement right for my sentiment and started by stamping that in night of navy. The sentiment is from the Paper Pumpkin bonus set, All About Everything that just fits so nicely into the curve of the cutout. Only then did I actually glue down the night of navy outline! I used the 2 way glue pen (because there’s no oozing challenge) and then started filling in some of the gaps with dapper denim and marina mist. Of course I have sufficient cut out pieces to make a couple more of these using the other colour ways.

I hope that you’ll pop along to the challenge blog to see what the rest of the design team have made and to have a go yourself. I’d love to see you in the gallery.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Sunburst Sayings Swirly Scribbles

Here’s a card that I made a couple of weeks ago and recently noticed that I hadn’t shared with you.  As you’ll probably guess from the elements used, it was just after I got my preorder and it was my first play with Swirly Scribbles and I paired it with two of the new incolours – dapper denim and sweet sugarplum.

I cut a number of the scribbles (there are three of them in the set and I used two here) in both dapper denim and sweet sugarplum and played around with them until I had the colours and scribbles where I liked them. Next was to find some sentiments that worked in the insides of the scribbles. Sunburst Sayings was still out on my desk and the Happy Birthday sentiment fit perfectly. I didn’t want two Happy Birthdays on the front though and went looking – the Woo Hoo! comes from the Sale-a-bration set Party Pants. If you missed Sale-a-bration in the first quarter of the year and don’t have that set, I’m sure that there are loads of other options in your collection. Using It’s Your Day from Sunburst Sayings would work although it would be best masked off and made into a two line sentiment. I stamped the sentiments, also in dapper denim and sweet sugarplum before gluing down the scribbles – just in case! Then I used my favourite 2 way glue pen to attach the scribbles – I’ll have to start using the fine tip glue pen soon, I may as well get used to the fact that the 2 way glue pen has retired!

I finished the card off with a dapper denim card base and dry embossed the envelope flap.

I made this card at the weekend and yet here I am sliding it into the challenge just under the wire! There’s just been too much excitement with the new catalogue launching to post my card. You’ll notice that I’ve finally managed to stop using the swoosh from the Swirly Scribbles thinlits dies and have actually used one of the scribbles!

Here’s the banner which inspired my card

Do you notice the shadow down the diagonal on my card? Yes, I cut the card to create the line in the sketch

I just took a regular cardbase, lined it up on my trimmer where it looked right and just chopped off a piece. I could’ve used that for the inside part but I actually used one of my precut liners which is a 1/4 inch smaller in both dimensions. I used the piece I’d removed from the card front to get the angle right and then embossed it using the Softly Falling TIEF. This serves two purposes – it decorates the card front when the card is closed and makes it clear where you shouldn’t write to prevent your message showing. I glued the non-embossed piece next to it with an added sentiment from Cottage Greetings.

Do you notice a couple of tiny pearls added to the dry embossing? There are three. I did the same on the envelope too, where they are easier to see.

For the focal point of the card, I finally used one of the scribbles from the swirly scribbles thinlits dies to cut out my real red piece. The sentiment is from Sunburst sayings and I popped up my very vanilla circle for a little extra interest. A very clean and simple card that’s easy to make although it looks a little intimidating to start with.

Don’t forget that I’m offering blog candy but the deadline to comment is tonight.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Swirly Scribbles Thinlits dies

I’m still playing with the Swirly Scribbles Thinlits dies and it’s still the swoosh. I did cut a number of the round scribbles out so I expect that they will make their way onto a card soon, but for today, it’s the swoosh.

Stampin' Up! Swirly Scribbles thinlits and All about Everything

I already had a real red swoosh cut because I’d used the insert pieces in my Mondrian inspired swoosh card, so really I’m just using up leftovers this morning! I like the way that the real red swoosh flows into the card base so that at first glance (unless you know what the swoosh looks like) it’s not obvious whether the swoosh has been added onto the card or whether I’ve cut out pieces of the very vanilla to reveal the real red below. I then cut out a few pieces in gold foil and glued them into place using my 2 way glue pen. I trimmed the overlapping edges of the swoosh easily with paper snips using the edge of the very vanilla as my guide. The sentiment comes from All About Everything, the bonus set that came with April’s Paper Pumpkin and is stamped in real red to match. Then I put the very vanilla onto a real red card base.

I didn’t have a real red envelope liner precut, but I did have this rather flashy gold one. It’s from last year’s holiday catalogue and unavailable these days. Envelope liners are a great way to use up leftover paper. I just checked the retiring list and I hope that if you wanted the envelope liner thinlits you have them because they are no longer available.

See you tomorrow,

Liz
