Sunburst Sayings Swirly Scribbles

Here’s a card that I made a couple of weeks ago and recently noticed that I hadn’t shared with you.  As you’ll probably guess from the elements used, it was just after I got my preorder and it was my first play with Swirly Scribbles and I paired it with two of the new incolours – dapper denim and sweet sugarplum.

I cut a number of the scribbles (there are three of them in the set and I used two here) in both dapper denim and sweet sugarplum and played around with them until I had the colours and scribbles where I liked them. Next was to find some sentiments that worked in the insides of the scribbles. Sunburst Sayings was still out on my desk and the Happy Birthday sentiment fit perfectly. I didn’t want two Happy Birthdays on the front though and went looking – the Woo Hoo! comes from the Sale-a-bration set Party Pants. If you missed Sale-a-bration in the first quarter of the year and don’t have that set, I’m sure that there are loads of other options in your collection. Using It’s Your Day from Sunburst Sayings would work although it would be best masked off and made into a two line sentiment. I stamped the sentiments, also in dapper denim and sweet sugarplum before gluing down the scribbles – just in case! Then I used my favourite 2 way glue pen to attach the scribbles – I’ll have to start using the fine tip glue pen soon, I may as well get used to the fact that the 2 way glue pen has retired!

I finished the card off with a dapper denim card base and dry embossed the envelope flap.

I made this card at the weekend and yet here I am sliding it into the challenge just under the wire! There’s just been too much excitement with the new catalogue launching to post my card. You’ll notice that I’ve finally managed to stop using the swoosh from the Swirly Scribbles thinlits dies and have actually used one of the scribbles!

Here’s the banner which inspired my card

Do you notice the shadow down the diagonal on my card? Yes, I cut the card to create the line in the sketch

I just took a regular cardbase, lined it up on my trimmer where it looked right and just chopped off a piece. I could’ve used that for the inside part but I actually used one of my precut liners which is a 1/4 inch smaller in both dimensions. I used the piece I’d removed from the card front to get the angle right and then embossed it using the Softly Falling TIEF. This serves two purposes – it decorates the card front when the card is closed and makes it clear where you shouldn’t write to prevent your message showing. I glued the non-embossed piece next to it with an added sentiment from Cottage Greetings.

Do you notice a couple of tiny pearls added to the dry embossing? There are three. I did the same on the envelope too, where they are easier to see.

For the focal point of the card, I finally used one of the scribbles from the swirly scribbles thinlits dies to cut out my real red piece. The sentiment is from Sunburst sayings and I popped up my very vanilla circle for a little extra interest. A very clean and simple card that’s easy to make although it looks a little intimidating to start with.

Don’t forget that I’m offering blog candy but the deadline to comment is tonight.

See you tomorrow,

World Map before it retires

World Map is one of the first stamp sets I bought. I intended to make a Father’s Day card with black embossing. It was a dismal failure because it was my first time at embossing and it was late evening and thus very hard to see whether the powder was melting. Plus, I had no idea what to expect. In the end, if I recall correctly, I just stamped the map in black ink. So I wanted to go back to my original plan and emboss the map.

I started with a piece of very vanilla and was reaching for the black embossing powder when I remembered that I have it in early espresso and my resolve to use more brown. So after using the embossing buddy and stamping the map image with versamark, I sprinkled on the early espresso embossing powder. It’s quite hard to see it melt, even in the middle of the day but this time, almost two years later, no powder fell off after I’d “finished” embossing. Next I used my aquapainter with no water and pressed my marina mist ink pad to get some ink on the list. I added one drop of water and started colouring in the water on the map. The reason for doing this almost dry was that I didn’t want to saturate the non-watercolor paper. Once the seas and oceans were completed, I coloured the land similarly, this time using crumb cake.

I used fast fuse to fix the piece of very vanilla to an early espresso card base and then pulled out Sunburst Sayings for a small and simple birthday greeting. Finally, I’ve found where this sentiment came from – I was looking for it a couple of days ago. I stamped it in early espresso on crumb cake – isn’t it interesting how the watered down crumb cake ink on very vanilla looks so different to the card? – and then popped it out with the 1.5 inch circle punch. I also had the 1 3/4 inch punch so I made a mat of early espresso for the greeting. I popped this up with dimensionals. I finished off the card by lining the envelope using the retired backgrounds DSP (there’s a replacement at the moment) and the envelope liner framelits. If you want the framelits, don’t forget that they are retiring at the end of the month.

Looking at the order information, I can see that my Paper Pumpkin for this month is likely to arrive on Monday as is my pre-order. I won’t know what to play with first!

See you tomorrow,

Hexagon Punch and It’s My Party

Here are two things which are retiring in a couple of weeks – the hexagon punch and the It’s My Party DSP stack. Both, as of this morning, are still available. The punch is extremely useful for cutting the ends of banners or, as in this case, for using up scraps.

The DSP scraps are all from the It’s My Party DSP, a very happy stack. I punched out about 10 in various scraps as well as a couple in crushed curry. I stamped the sentiment on one of these also in crushed curry ink. I’d tell you where the sentiment is from, but I can’t find it – I’ve sorted out my sets into current, retired but I’m keeping and retired and a quick look through this morning hasn’t helped. It is a very similar sentiment to one in the Sale-a-bration set, Party Pants. I eventually will locate the set and I’ll update this. Edit: I located the stamp set – it’s Sunburst Sayings.

Then comes the fun piece – take a piece of whisper white and start arranging the hexagons. For this arrangement I decided that I wanted them falling down the page. Once I had them laid out, I started at the bottom right and worked up one. Then I started at the top left – hoping I’d got my placement pretty close – and worked down. I’ve noted before that the hexagon isn’t totally perfect so I like to pop up at least one of the hexagons to disguise this. I did this again today, popping up the sentiment one. Here’s a better view of that.

And that’s it – a quick and easy card which uses up scraps. What more could you ask for?

See you tomorrow (at 8am because it’s a Thursday and I align my posting with the challenge thread),

Paper Pumpkin February 2016 Alternate 6

Here’s another idea of what to do with the leftover pieces once you’ve used the orange flower from the Paper Pumpkin February 2016 kit, Hello Sunshine.

Stampin' Up! Paper Pumpkin February 2016 Hello Sunshine and Sunburst Sayings

I wanted a circular stamp for the middle of the flower and found the perfect shaped sentiment in Sunburst Sayings which I stamped on very vanilla in pear pizzazz. Then using a paper piercing tool to help, I picked up the orange pieces one at a time and placed them around the sentiment, working outwards. The idea was to have a kind of exploding flower look which I think worked. I mounted this onto a card base of calypso coral and then grabbed one of my precut liners, this one from the retired backgrounds DSP – there’s a new pack to replace these (and I have it) but I’m still using up the liners that I cut previously.

Tomorrow there’s a new challenge over at CAS Colours & Sketches – there’s still time to play with this week’s challenge – so my post will be going out later at just before 8am to coordinate with that.

See you tomorrow,
