For this alternative use of the Paper Pumpkin May 2016 kit, I looked for some DSP which would work with the die cut. Most didn’t work due to having too large a pattern but this piece of the new Pop of Pink Specialty DSP worked a treat. And it’s amusing to use bright pink with the Many Manly Occasions kit!

Quick and easy to do – I cut a piece of DSP a smidge smaller than my usual insert of 4″ by 5 1/4″ and then stuck it onto a whisper white insert. Then I used the glue dots provided in the kit to attach it to the inside of the die cut card. I added the whisper white because this piece of DSP has a mostly black reverse side and I thought it a bit too harsh for a birthday card!

Next I used my current favourite birthday sentiment from Watercolor Wishes and stamped it badly in melon mambo. As in the h of happy birthday had a smudge. So it was time to look at my embellishments to see what would work to cover this and found the now retired botanical garden jewels. Perfect. They jazzed up the card rather well, hid the error and left me with only 3 jewels for one more card. I’ve almost finished a pot of embellishments. Amazing!

It’s time for another Paper Pumpkin May 2016 alternate! This time I decided to make my own “DSP” using many of the words in the Many Manly Occasions kit and since I happened to have three of my Stampin’ Write markers sitting together (dapper denim, emerald envy and real red) I had my colour scheme already decided!

I originally intended to have HAPPY and BIRTHDAY popping out of the background by stamping them in real red, but it seemed too one dimensional, so after stamping random words from the stamp set on the background in my three serendipitous colours, I decided that I needed some extra punch. I turned to my much used Hello You thinlits and cut out the happy in real red. I cut a whisper white banner just the size to cover three rows of words and stamped the BIRTHDAY in real red. Next I added the die cut word using my favourite 2 way glue pen. Since I was looking for extra dimension, I popped the white banner up using stampin’ dimensionals which give a peek at the stamped words underneath from the side.

I had a quick look through my filed DSP and found a piece of Merry Moments DSP which is retiring in a couple of days. I coloured in a few extra circles in real red, dapper denim and emerald envy to make it match the card better.  So that’s my fifth Paper Pumpkin May 2016 alternate – I still have to come up with an alternate for the triangle die cut card. I think I’ll play with that this afternoon.

Paper Pumpkin May 2016 Alternate 3

Here’s my third Paper Pumpkin May 2016 alternate – I’m still playing with the awesome die cut card fronts. This one is a lot of fun to make and can be done in any variety of colours. As you may have noticed (!), I’m enjoying using Dapper Denim, one of the upcoming in colours, and this time I paired it with emerald envy (sure to be another favourite) and elegant eggplant. A really rich combination.

I started by grabbing a piece of whisper white, just 1/8 inch smaller than the base and then cut strips of card in dapper denim, emerald envy and elegant eggplant which are 9/16 of inch wide. I positioned a long strip of elegant eggplant (the piercing tool is great for help here, reaching through the die cut front) and one of the strips at 90 degrees to it. Once I had those positioned, I didn’t need to worry and just had fun adding strips to the whisper white. I did check every now and then, that this really was going to work and the 9/16″ was the perfect width and it still looked good. But here’s what my whisper white looked like when I finished:

As you can see, I just added strips snugged up to their neighbours and it was so easy. Obviously I checked the overall look to help determine whether the gaps needed to be filled in or not before finishing. I then added glue dots to the four corners and to the solid band across the front of the card and glued down the coloured piece. Next was the sentiment which is made up of two stamps from the Many Manly Occasions Paper Pumpkin set, stamped in emerald envy.

I lined the envelope using the envelope liners framelits (retiring) and the retired backgrounds DSP in elegant eggplant. I do have the newer non-retired regals DSP stack but I still have some of the old ones to use up.

I’m a little late posting today – it’s my father’s 83rd birthday and the first one since we lost my mother last year. He and I went for a fairly emotional walk to the nearby Arboretum which the two of them visited fairly frequently. He approved today’s card and said he preferred it to the one in the Paper Pumpkin May 2016 kit, so I’m calling that a win. I’m really enjoying playing with the die cut cards provided in the kit – I’m going to have a lot of the corrugated orange left because this is my third card that hasn’t used it (I have another all ready to share).

The colour inspiration came from CAS on Sunday – the directive is to use white cardstock and three of the following colours:

I’m surprised – and pleased – to find how well blushing bride and mint macaron go together – I’ll have to try them again some time. But, how did I make the sort of Mondrian inspired card? I say sort of Mondrian inspired because he was known for black lines with primary colour blocks – I tried primary colours first, but the white just wasn’t working. This was when I decided to try pastels and realised that the colour palette at CAS on Sunday was perfect.

So first I cut strips of mint macaron, blushing bride and bermuda bay at 9/16 inch wide (just one notch over the half inch on the Stampin’ trimmer)  and made some of them 9/16″  long, other 1 1/8″ inch long and one 3 7/16″. I then took a piece of whisper white 4″ by 5.25″ and placed it inside the card and guessed where I wanted my squares and rectangles. I found that the paper piercing tool was awesome for nudging them around. When I had the colours where I wanted them, I opened the card and made light pencil marks at the corners of one of the blocks of colour. I then put a bit of glue on the back and stuck it down. After the third block, I noticed that things weren’t quite lined up and had to pull off a square to redo it. At this point, I had a “duh” moment and realised that I should stick my piece of whisper white to the card temporarily. So I used post-it tape for this – it worked perfectly.

Once I had all my colour blocks glued down, I added a few circles of post-it tape underneath the piece of whisper white to temporarily hold it to the card base. Then I added glue dots across the central piece and at the corners and the whisper white was perfectly placed. It was easy to open the card and remove the post-it tape.

I decided that the card needed a big Happy in mint macaron, using the Hello You thinlits dies as yesterday and the birthday from the Paper Pumpkin May 2016 kit stamped in Bermuda Bay. I finished off the envelope with last year’s in colors DSP stack and the envelope liners.

Paper Pumpkin May 2016 Alternate

Well, here’s my first Paper Pumpkin May 2016 Alternate – I’ve been a bit slow with this because I was so busy playing with my preorder (it was a bigger box than Paper Pumpkin!). The Many Manly Occasions kit is really great, but I don’t want eight cards so similar – do you? I decided to save a piece of the corrugated orange card and replace it with something else. It turns out that it’s best with a plain colour behind it and I hit on the happy idea of combining Paper Pumpkin with my preorder. Hence, I chose a piece of dapper denim.

Isn’t it a beautiful blue? I then used emerald envy (definitely going to be a favourite colour) to cut out my happy sentiment from Hello You – a thinlit that is happily continuing into the coming annual catalogue. I stamped the sentiment from the Many Manly Occasions (say that fast 3 times!) in dapper denim after figuring out positioning so that I had enough room for my emerald envy sentiment. I attached the happy with the 2 way glue pen which I’m sad is on the retiring list. It works so well for skinny sentiments.

As you can see, I cut out a second happy sentiment to decorate the envelope. I’m not so sure how this would do through the mail, I may have to do a test and let you know. This one though, I’ll add to my stack of birthday cards in the office.

So that’s it for the first Paper Pumpkin May 2016 Alternate – I think I’ll go and come up with a card using the now leftover orange corrugated card.
