Lotus Blossom for a class

Here’s one of the cards that I did for a recent class. Once they got the hang of lining up the arrows on the Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom set, they loved it. The three images of the flower each have an arrow (that doesn’t appear when you stamp) that you point in the same direction on each stamp to help with lining up the image. This set is only available through the end of March – it’s one of the freebies during Sale-a-bration.

Stampin' Up! Lotus Blossom

We stamped the first (smallest and most detailed image) in lost lagoon and used the same ink for the second image, but we stamped off once first. The third image is stamped in pool party. We used pear pizzazz for the stalk – full strength for the partial image and stamped off once for the second image. Once that was done to our satisfaction (extra card stock may possibly have been sacrificed here!), we used the embossing buddy to remove any static and then stamped the sentiment from Work of Art in versamark. They of course loved watching the gold come to life under the heat tool. Who wouldn’t? The piece of very vanilla was then mounted on a piece of pear pizzazz and then put onto a card base of lost lagoon with stampin’ dimensionals. The card is a 4.25″ square. So we used the envelope punch board to make an envelope for a 4.5″ square card (a little extra room for the dimensionals), starting with a 7.5″ square of lost lagoon. They were surprised at how easy it is to make custom sized envelopes – I believe that there are measurements for 66 different sizes of envelopes on this handy tool. That’s pretty impressive for a tool that costs under $20.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Stepped up boho blossom

On Wednesday I shared a card that I made for a CAS and orange challenge. Whilst making it, I lost sight of the goal and wandered off into the realm of pink, aka melon mambo. But I liked where the pink card was going so I decided to step it up a bit as a contrast to the pumpkin pie version. Here’s what I finally came up with.

It’s a bit of a mirror image of the orange one with the punch being used on the melon mambo. I stepped up the sentiment a bit and embossed it in white instead of just stamping it. It’s from the Sale-a-bration set, Lotus Blossom. I then popped up the whole piece of melon mambo with stampin’ dimensionals and added one of the flowers that I’d cut out and this time, three rhinestones.

I originally had two of the rhinestones coloured in melon mambo and one left alone.

Then I tried old olive

But I wanted something a bit more emerald green. After a chat with Jen this morning, I tried colouring a rhinestone in the lightest night of navy blendability and, after it dried, using the darkest wild wasabi. That is exactly what I was looking for. Here’s a side view showing the colour better as well as the dimension.

This definitely demonstrates, to me at least, that it’s worth tweaking a card until you’re happy. And as a bonus, I have some already coloured rhinestones ready to use on another project!

Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom

I think that that the Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom set is going to be the most popular of the Sale-a-bration free items. There are a lot of good things in the brochure, but the Lotus Blossom is awesome! The detail created by the 3 step stamp process is amazing.

Stampin' Up! Lotus Blossom

I belong to a small online step club where we have competitions and try to encourage each other to step more. For the last 3 years, I’ve run a year long challenge where the goal is to end the year with an annual average higher than the previous one. This year hasn’t been so good for a lot of people – injuries, illness and so forth – and only four of the dozen or so members achieved the goal. I decided to send a card to each of the people who met the challenge.

Karen is amazing. She’s a walker which means that she can get a maximum of around 6,000 steps per hour; runners can get closer to 9,000. So the fact that Karen is our highest stepper in a club that contains runners, most of whom do marathons, is quite outstanding. She has averaged over 22,000 steps per day; to do that consistently is quite a feat.

So the sentiment from the Painted Petals seems apt. And I was still trying to make happy lotus blossoms and finally succeeded. I thought I was using the colours from the All is Calm paper but today discovered that this DSP has Soft Sky, not Pool Party. However I really love the combination of lost lagoon, pear pizzazz and pool party. I stamped the first (smallest) petals in lost lagoon and then the second stamp in lost lagoon after stamping off once. The final flower image was done in pool party. For the stem I did the first image in full strength pear pizzazz and the second one after stamping off once. I matted my very vanilla in pool party and mounted it on a square of lost lagoon.

Another sneak peek at lotus blossom

Most people have seen the Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom set by now. It’s a great 3 stamp set but I was struggling with it a little trying to make happy cards. I decided to try and make a monochrome version. A bit arty, if you will. And it looked great except I thought it looked like sympathy card. I showed it to my brother Martin. “Ah, a sympathy card”, he said. Oops. But I liked the card so I kept it.

Stampin' Up! Lotus Blossom

I stamped the 3 flowers in sahara sand on sahara sand. I liked the monochrome look but, as I mentioned previously, it looked funereal. As did a lot of my other  lotus blossom flowers in various colours. This one I liked and gave in to, adding a sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes in Early Espresso. The base of the card is also Early Espresso – not a colour that I tend to use as a card base. It’s good, I guess, to use different colours. I lined the envelope in the backgrounds DSP in the sahara sand colour. It doesn’t feel quite right to have sympathy cards ready to go, but when you need them, you need them RIGHT NOW and might not have time to make them, so maybe it’s not a bad thing. Let me know what you think on that issue.

The name of the stamp set, Lotus Blossom, reminds me of The Teahouse of The August Moon since there is a geisha called Lotus Blossom in it. It’s an hilarious film with Marlon Brandon and Glenn Ford and very much worth watching.  My father and I watched it just the other night and I had forgotten how hysterically funny it really is. Watch it. You’ll thank me for it!

Sale-A-Bration sneak peek

My order arrived today – a day ahead of schedule! So rather than play with any challenges, I had to play with some of my new stuff. I’ve been looking forward to trying the Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom set. It’s a sale-a-bration item which means that you can get it for free after you spend $50 (before shipping and tax) which really isn’t hard to do. In fact, for each $50 you spend, you get to select one item. Sale-a-bration starts for the general public on January 6th. For now, all demonstrators can show is projects made with the new items, not any of the pages of the new occasions or sale-a-bration catalogues.

Stampin' Up Lotus Blossom

I really love this stamp set – it’s a 3 step set meaning that you layer 3 images to get the end result. I started with the first stamp (they are numbered, don’t worry!) in cajun craze but I stamped on scrap paper first to get a less intense colour and then used crushed curry for the second image. I decided to also use crushed curry for the third image but stamped off on scrap paper first to get a paler colour there as well.

The stems are a two stamp image and I used Always Artichoke for both, stamping off for the second image to give the contrast. The Thank you is from the same set and that is obviously stamped in crushed curry as well. I adhered my piece of very vanilla onto a crushed curry base and then lined the envelope using the Background DSP from the Regal collection in crushed curry.
