Perpetual Birthday calendar – hello March

I’m continuing my series of cards for the first day of the month using the Stampin’ Up! Perpetual Birthday calendar stamp set. So far they’ve also used the Hello You thinlits dies as well. Since I’m about 75% Welsh, March 1st is a special day being St. David’s Day. St. David of course being the patron saint of Wales. I took my colour inspiration from the Welsh flag. Here’s an image of it from wikipedia’s page on Wales.

So this is whisper white, real red and garden green. I cut out the hello from real red using the Hello You thinlits dies and then stamped the month from the Perpetual Birthday calendar in green. I also used the March image and the two colours for decoration.

Do you see that the hello looks rather three dimensional? I got the idea from Mary Fish’s site, Stampin’ Pretty last year where she had a layered Joy. I cut out four garden green hellos and carefully glued them together using the tombow glue. I put a splodge of glue onto a card scrap so that I can carefully control how much I’m transferring to the die cut word I find that if I’m actually having to squeeze the bottle there’s a chance that there will be too much glue. Also it helps to let the glue sit for a few minutes so that it’s a bit more set and less likely to leak out. Here’s a view from the side:

I really like the two tone affect. After re-checking Mary’s site, I found that she’d used transfer adhesive sheets which would have been MUCH easier. Next time! I glued the whisper white onto a real red base. I also lined the outside of the envelope flap with the backgrounds DSP in real red.

PPA239 colour challenge

As usual there was a new PPA challenge announced on Thursday and happily it was a colour one. I find those much easier although the colours chosen caused me some angst. I am not fond of brown; it just doesn’t seem like a happy colour. Hence it took me until Friday evening to create my card! So although it’s Valentine’s Day today, I’m not posting a Valentine’s Day card. I’m not ignoring the day though, my brother and I will be hosting our usual singles Valentine’s Day dinner for our local friends (as long as the weather is kind). Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

I’ve seen a lot of cards done with the bokeh technique lately and I thought I’d give it a try. Bokeh, according to wikipedia is “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light” and thus the final out of focus circles are usually done in white. I decided to be different. I know, what a surprise.

Stampin' Up Hello You on bokeh with a twist

I used my aquapainter to thoroughly wet a quarter sheet of water colour paper and then added crumb cake and soft suede, also with the aquapainter. After waiting a couple of hours for it to dry, I used a sponge dauber to add circles of real red. My template was created using the acetate sheet from a photopolymer stamp set and the three smallest circle framelits. The acetate sheet was available because I have followed what I’ve seen a number of people do and I stick the stamps directly onto the case. The printed acetate sheet for each stamp set is stuck on the other side to help with placement and make it obvious if there’s a stamp still out on my desk.

I then cut out the thanks from the Stampin’ Up! Hello You framelit set in real red. The water colour paper is matted in soft suede (use strong glue and ensure you get to the edges) and glued to a base of crumb cake.

And here’s the banner that inspired this card:

Happy February

I’m a bit late posting today; I got back yesterday from three weeks of Spanish school in Barcelona and although I managed to schedule all the posts for whilst I was away, I didn’t have time to get a few extras done to allow for jet lag!

I was happy with the Hello January card from last month so I decided to continue the theme. This card uses the Stampin’ Up! Hello You thinlits dies and the Perpetual Birthday calendar stamp set. The base is real red and the very vanilla piece is 3/4 inch smaller in both dimensions. I had intended on adding another layer of blushing bride but it just seemed too much after the stamping. I used the heart stamp from the Perpetual birthday calendar and stamped in real red and blushing bride. The February also comes from the Perpetual birthday calendar stamp set. The happy is of course cut out from real red using the Hello You thinlits dies. I have had a lot of success by running the die through the big shot half a dozen times before trying to coax the card off the die. I was also going to add some of the heart stickers from the perpetual birthday calendar kit but that seemed to be overkill.

If you ever get the opportunity to go to another country to learn another language do it! It was an amazing experience. It was pretty scary the first day, being in a country where I could basically just ask for water, wine or the check but really, what more do you need?! It was incredible how quickly I learned to understand and speak more. The people in Barcelona are extremely nice and friendly and generous. They all seemed so delighted that I was making the effort to speak in Spanish, that they would patiently wait as I stumbled through my phrases. I’ve made a number of new friends and if I could, I’d go back tomorrow!

Sheltering Tree

Rebecca is the fourth member of our walk club to achieve the challenge of increasing her step average over the previous year. As I mentioned in earlier posts, I decided to send cards to the four members who achieved this. Karen’s, Gary’s and Gail’s cards can be seen using these links.

Stampin' Up! Sheltering Tree

I am especially proud of Rebecca for meeting this challenge because she had some very painful issues with her back to overcome so she gathered her steps a few at a time. Constantly. And focused on the goal every single day. Such determination is to be applauded.

Rebecca is a member of my Critique Board as I call it. I often email them with photos of cards completed or sometimes in progress. So Rebecca saw Karen’s card before it was published (or even sent) and she commented that she loves square cards. So this is a 4 inch square card in old olive (she loves green too). I was planning to use the tree from the Stampin’ Up! Sheltering Tree set but it didn’t really fit so I just used the grassy bank and the flower stalks both in old olive and the flowers in real red on a layer of very vanilla.

Then I cut out the you using the Hello You thinlits in both real red and old olive so that I could decide on colour. As you can see, old olive won. I’m amassing a nice stash of words from this thinlit set as I usually cut them in a couple of colours and only then decide which to use. The “so proud of” comes from the Crazy About You stamp set and it’s stamped in real red.

I then used the envelope punch board and a square of very vanilla to create an envelope for this card. Instead of lining it, I stamped the images from the card (the stamps were already covered in ink!) onto the front as you see. I’m really pleased with how this came out.

Stampin’ Up! Hello You Thinlit Dies

The Stampin’ Up! Hello You thinlit dies are one of my favourite things, (okay, there are many favourites) from the new occasions catalogue. I wanted to make a card for Gail, the third member of the Walk Club who achieved the annual challenge (details of the challenge are on the first of these posts about Karen’s card) and out came the Hello You thinlit dies.

Stampin' Up! Hello You thinlit dies

It was definitely a day to be playing with new things because this card also uses both the Painted Petals and the Crazy about you stamp sets. They look good together don’t they?! I started with the leaves in garden green – it looks a trifle intimidating with the leaves and stems broken up so much but it’s all one stamp and then the flowers are all on another stamp and fit the gaps easily. I like to focus on the single flower on the left to help with the placement. The flowers were stamped in rose red.

Then I cut out the word happy with the thinlit dies, also in rose red. The tip on the thinlit packaging, to run the die through the big shot multiple times really seems to work well. I’ve also found that I can leave the wax paper on the die itself after it’s cut out and that works multiple times. So far I’ve cut out a word three times using the same wax paper. I figured out where I wanted the “For You” from the Crazy About You stamp set and stamped it in garden green before sticking the word happy – I didn’t want to be using my stamp-a-ma-jig on an angle. I used the tombow glue to adhere the word to the card – if you leave the glue to set a little before sticking it down, it doesn’t ooze. I finished off the envelope with the backgrounds DSP in rose red from the regals collection. I am now incapable of leaving an envelope untouched and either line it, put the paper on the outside flap, dry emboss the flap or stamp on the envelope to coordinate with the card. It really finishes the card off in my opinion.
