Moroccan DSP for a set of cards

I was having fun at the recent crop and made a few boxes to fit some cards. Which meant that I needed to make sets of cards! For one of them I turned to the Moroccan DSP which is gorgeous and reminds me so much of some of my trips to Spain, in particular the Alhambra which is beyond words stunning. Having mentioned the Alhambra, I feel a bit odd introducing just a card, but the patterns really do fit.

I cut a strip, a fairly random width and then a piece of early espresso 1/8 inch larger so that I got a really thin mat. After I had that glued together I put it onto a very vanilla card base for positioning and then stamped my sentiment in early espresso. It’s from Endless Birthday Wishes and it’s always sensible to stamp the sentiment early in case of issues. This way you can recover. At it happens, it was perfect and I could glue the paneled piece onto the card base.

I cut another piece of the DSP 2 1/8 by 6 inches so that I could glue it to the envelope flap and snip off the excess. And there we have it – a masculine birthday card and one, moreover, that isn’t just navy and brown! The Moroccan DSP is going to be very useful for birthday cards for the IT department. 🙂

Blooms and Wishes for CAS C&S

Happy Thursday which means another challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. It’s the fifth Thursday in the month so it’s a double challenge – colours AND a sketch. I got to use a couple of new and so far unused sets, Blooms and Wishes and Penned & Painted and I can see a lot of use for these sets in the near future.

Stampin' Up! Blooms & Wishes and Penned & Painted and Endless Birthday Wishes

Here’s the banner which inspired my card.

Fun right? I’ll be interested to hear how the rest of the design team cut their curve. I used a plate and my piercing tool and then used paper snips. Once I’d cut my curved piece of whisper white, I stamped my images, the flower in bermuda bay from Blooms and Wishes and the ladybird and centre of the flower from Penned & Painted using melon mambo and daffodil delight. Next I took the Endless Birthday Wishes set and curved the photopolymer stamps for the greeting to match the curve of my card. After stamping that in the right place, I attached my homemade DSP with the tombow glue.

Don’t forget that today is the last day to take advantage of two Stampin’ Up! offers  – firstly if your order (you can club together with friends) is over $350 you get an extra $35 in Stampin’ Rewards on top of the 12% that you already get. So if you hit $350 right on the nose, you’d get $77 in free stuff! The other offer ending today is if you join as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator. As usual you get $125 of product for just $99 with free shipping (a $12.50 value) but you also get to add two free stamp sets to your completely customisable starter kit. Depending upon which sets you choose, that’s just over $100 of more free stuff. And if you never buy another thing, that’s fine. Or if you do choose to buy, just $300 of sales (sales to yourself are included) keeps you enjoying a 20% discount. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s not!! Just go to the Become a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator page over on the left to join up.

See you tomorrow,

Endless Birthday Wishes

The challenge at CAS on Sunday this time is a word – Sparkle with the encouragement to use bling. I don’t use bling all that often as it evidenced by the fact that I had my red rhinestones already coloured, I think for a card when I was making Christmas cards last year!

Stampin' Up! Endless Birthday Wishes

It also helped with my colour scheme! I’d coloured the rhinestones with a retired cherry cobbler blendability but you could use a sharpie if you don’t have any of those. Or another alcohol marker. So this supremely CAS card uses one of my well used sets, Endless Birthday Wishes and I stamped the cake in cherry cobbler onto whisper white. I also stamped the sentiment from the same set before playing with rhinestones. There are little stars on the candles which I chose to cover up with rhinestones fully intending to use one of the red ones. But I decided that I needed more sparkle! As if someone was blowing out the candles and the sparkle was still showing, hence the stream of rhinestones.

It doesn’t show that well in the photo and it’s not necessary, but I dry embossed the flap of the envelope with a retired embossing folder. I can’t see ever selling my embossing folders, they are so useful for a quick way to add interest to an envelope. And Endless Birthday Wishes is an amazingly versatile set which you need – I’m always using the sentiments either on the card front itself or inside. I’m surprised the the “celebrate” still works!

See you tomorrow,

Balloon Framelits dies for CAS C&S

It’s Thursday which means it’s time for another challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. Since it’s the fourth Thursday in the month, it’s time for a sketch challenge which rounds out my sister’s first month as challenge hostess.

Stampin' Up! Balloon framelits dies and endless birthday wishes

Here’s the banner which inspired my card

I decided earlier in the week that I wanted to have a bunch of balloons but the challenge was going to be how to make five sizes! I started with the balloon framelits dies and the orange corrugated paper from this month’s Paper Pumpkin kit. I’m not sure whether using just the paper really counts as a Paper Pumpkin May 2016 alternate though. [Edit: After discussion with my sister, we decided it counts!] I cut out the first balloon and then turned to the circles collection of framelits. I cropped a circle smaller than the balloon in pacific point and then used the balloon framelits dies to cut the neck of the balloon. This made a fairly odd shaped balloon and required a little trimming with my paper snips. I then repeated the process using smaller and smaller circles until I had my five balloons.

I decided to have the balloon strings be gathered at a point off the card, so to ensure that it looked consistent, I used post-it tape to anchor my card a little and placed an X on my grid paper for where the strings would gather. Then I glued the balloons on with their necks pointing towards the X with the smallest one popped up with a dimensional . I then used the string from Balloon Celebration which I stamped in archival basic black.

To finish off the card, I added one of my favourite sentiments from Endless Birthday Wishes in pacific point and then, just as I was about to photograph the card, I added the epoxy star which is one of the embellishments in the Itty Bitty Accents Epoxy Stickers pack.

I hope that you’ll head over to the CAS Colours & Sketches blog to have a look at the inspiration from the rest of the design team and to have a go at the challenge yourself. You don’t have to have a blog to take part, you can upload to public galleries and link to your card there.

See you tomorrow,

Swirly Scribbles Mondrian style

I’m having a lot of fun with the Swirly Scribbles thinlits dies as you’ve probably noticed. Piet Mondrian was a dutch painter who was known for what he termed neoplasticism – drawings of vertical and horizontal black lines over a white background with the addition of three primary colours. The Paper Pumpkin alternates that I’ve been making lately using the white die cuts reminded me of Mondrian’s work and I decided to use the same idea using the Swirly Scribbles thinlits dies.

Stampin' Up! Swirly Scribbles thinlits and Endless Birthday wishes

So I started by using the Swirly Scribbles thinlits die to cut out the shape in basic black. Then, since I was on a dapper denim kick, I cut it out with that card stock and then also daffodil delight and real red. I used my two way glue pen to glue the piece of basic black to the thick whisper white and trimmed off the ends with my paper snips. Next I took the cut outs in the three primary colours and added them to the card. I decided to leave a couple blank for a more Mondrian like effect. Then comes a demonstration of why I love photopolymer stamps – not only can you see where you’re placing them, but you can bend them. I took the celebrate stamp from Endless Birthday wishes and bent it to match the curve of the thinlits and stamped it in real red.

I bought these thinlits because I loved the circular scribbles but I’ve barely used those yet because I keep using this shape!

There’s less than a week to go to the new catalogue – and thus less than a week left to get the retiring items from last year’s catalogue. Make sure that you have everything that you need from that one before it’s too late!

See you tomorrow – around 8am when a new challenge at CAS Colour & Sketches is revealed,
