Crazy about bordering blooms

I’m trying not to ignore my stamp sets from the annual catalogue for the new ones in the Occasions 2015 one and today pulled out the Stampin’ Up! Bordering Blooms set and decided to ink up a stamp that I haven’t used before. I couldn’t quite make a card with just the older sets and confess that I also used the Crazy about you set from the new Occasions catalogue! As I have mentioned, I was in Barcelona for three weeks to learn Spanish and it was fantastic. The people there are warm and friendly and I decided I needed to make some thank you cards. I stayed in Gloria’s house, with a number of other students, and she is a delight. She intimidated me hugely to start with since I could barely understand one word in twenty but by the end of the three weeks, we sat happily at the table chatting away in Spanish (mostly – my fellow students and I had to exchange a few words in English) for several hours. I’m not saying that I’m fluent, – far from it! – I have to deduce some of the content. But anyway, Gloria, this one’s for you.

Stampin' Up! Bordering blooms

I stamped the image from the bordering blooms in memento black on whisper white card stock. The leaves are coloured in the two lightest shades of the old olive blendabilities. The flowers are coloured in all three shades of the rich razzleberry. I cropped the image fairly severely (more so than my original intention) and bordered it with basic black 3/8 bigger in all dimensions. Currently I’m concentrating on having different sized borders and frames for some fun. I also stamped the Thanks from the Crazy About You set in memento black. The card base is old olive. There’s another unused stamp in this set, I think that will be inked up soon.

Sheltering Tree

Rebecca is the fourth member of our walk club to achieve the challenge of increasing her step average over the previous year. As I mentioned in earlier posts, I decided to send cards to the four members who achieved this. Karen’s, Gary’s and Gail’s cards can be seen using these links.

Stampin' Up! Sheltering Tree

I am especially proud of Rebecca for meeting this challenge because she had some very painful issues with her back to overcome so she gathered her steps a few at a time. Constantly. And focused on the goal every single day. Such determination is to be applauded.

Rebecca is a member of my Critique Board as I call it. I often email them with photos of cards completed or sometimes in progress. So Rebecca saw Karen’s card before it was published (or even sent) and she commented that she loves square cards. So this is a 4 inch square card in old olive (she loves green too). I was planning to use the tree from the Stampin’ Up! Sheltering Tree set but it didn’t really fit so I just used the grassy bank and the flower stalks both in old olive and the flowers in real red on a layer of very vanilla.

Then I cut out the you using the Hello You thinlits in both real red and old olive so that I could decide on colour. As you can see, old olive won. I’m amassing a nice stash of words from this thinlit set as I usually cut them in a couple of colours and only then decide which to use. The “so proud of” comes from the Crazy About You stamp set and it’s stamped in real red.

I then used the envelope punch board and a square of very vanilla to create an envelope for this card. Instead of lining it, I stamped the images from the card (the stamps were already covered in ink!) onto the front as you see. I’m really pleased with how this came out.

Stampin’ Up! Hello You Thinlit Dies

The Stampin’ Up! Hello You thinlit dies are one of my favourite things, (okay, there are many favourites) from the new occasions catalogue. I wanted to make a card for Gail, the third member of the Walk Club who achieved the annual challenge (details of the challenge are on the first of these posts about Karen’s card) and out came the Hello You thinlit dies.

Stampin' Up! Hello You thinlit dies

It was definitely a day to be playing with new things because this card also uses both the Painted Petals and the Crazy about you stamp sets. They look good together don’t they?! I started with the leaves in garden green – it looks a trifle intimidating with the leaves and stems broken up so much but it’s all one stamp and then the flowers are all on another stamp and fit the gaps easily. I like to focus on the single flower on the left to help with the placement. The flowers were stamped in rose red.

Then I cut out the word happy with the thinlit dies, also in rose red. The tip on the thinlit packaging, to run the die through the big shot multiple times really seems to work well. I’ve also found that I can leave the wax paper on the die itself after it’s cut out and that works multiple times. So far I’ve cut out a word three times using the same wax paper. I figured out where I wanted the “For You” from the Crazy About You stamp set and stamped it in garden green before sticking the word happy – I didn’t want to be using my stamp-a-ma-jig on an angle. I used the tombow glue to adhere the word to the card – if you leave the glue to set a little before sticking it down, it doesn’t ooze. I finished off the envelope with the backgrounds DSP in rose red from the regals collection. I am now incapable of leaving an envelope untouched and either line it, put the paper on the outside flap, dry emboss the flap or stamp on the envelope to coordinate with the card. It really finishes the card off in my opinion.

Hello You thinlits for Spring

It’s not spring here, not even close. It’s below freezing actually but the day looked beautiful – from inside. So I decided to make a spring like wreath using the Stampin’ Up! Wondrous wreath stamp set and the Wonderful wreath framelits to show that they aren’t just for the holiday season. Although it may be a while before I can send this card!

Stampin' Up! Wondrous Wreath

I started by cutting out the centre of the wreath with the tab on the framelit pointing straight upwards so that it would be easy to remember where to put the tabs on the stamp set and also when cutting out the outside of the wreath. It’s much easier to cut the centre first because if you wait until you’ve stamped, you can’t see clearly where the centre is! I stamped the first set of leaves in wild wasabi, stamping off first. The second set of leaves were in wild wasabi also. Then I stamped the flowers in so saffron and perfect plum and cut them out with the flower from the wonderful wreath framelits. I then cut out the happy using the Hello You framelits in a couple of colours so that I could decide which I preferred (adding the runners up to my stash of words). After deciding on the layout, I stamped the Spring in wild wasabi. This is from the Stampin’ Up! Crazy about you stamp set. I then used glue dots to fix on the flowers and popped up the wreath using stampin’ dimensionals. The happy was adhered using the tombow glue giving the glue a little time to set a bit before fixing it so that it wouldn’t ooze. I dry embossed the envelope flap with the plenty-a-petals embossing folder to match the flowers on the wreath.

More goodies from the upcoming catalogue

I was working on a challenge card for the nacho average challenge blog but the link was closing today and I’d have needed to publish this post around midnight and then link it up. Instead of writing the post, I watched My Fellow Americans with my father and some chardonnay for me and brandy for him. I love that movie and have seen it many many times and it is still incredibly funny. Jack Lemmon and James Garner are wonderful. So here’s my card for the pear pizzazz, lost lagoon and silver challenge even though it isn’t being entered.

Stampin' Up! Crazy about You

The flower is from an upcoming set, the Stampin’ Up! Crazy about You set. It’s 30 stamps of words and three images. There is a coordinating new punch for this flower – the Flower Medallion but I don’t have it. Yet. So I snipped the flower out after stamping it in lost lagoon. Then I decided to stamp it again in pear pizzazz and snip out the centre of the flower. My mother watched in horror as I snipped away, declaring that it would drive her crazy to do that kind of thing (even though she does dress making as a hobby) but it’s strangely relaxing. I glued the flower together with the tombow glue.

The strip of DSP is from the All is Calm DSP and it’s the first time that I’ve used it. I love this pattern and have never wanted to cut into it previously. But I have to do something with my growing mountain of DSP other than just look at it from time to time! I used stampin’ dimensionals to pop the flower up.

After this I used the silver glimmer paper and the new Hello You thinlits dies to cut out the thanks. The set also has “hello”, “you” and “happy”. The instructions suggest that by running it through the big shot 3 times, you’ll get a cleaner cut. That definitely helped – especially as my waxed paper had migrated down to the workshop in the basement. Next time I will be interested to see how it works with wax paper and the three times through the big shot – I’ve “liberated” a roll of wax paper from the basement.
