Balloon Adventures

After the fun with the heat embossing and watercoloring over the past couple of days, I decided to do a set in a different color way. So I took a complete page of watercolor paper and my Balloon Adventures stamp set and stamped in versamark sprinkling on clear embossing powder as I went so that it was easier to see where I’d been.

It takes longer to emboss on watercolor paper but it warps less than regular card stock. One it was cool though, I refilled my aquapainter and starting spreading water over the paper along with daffodil delight, melon mambo and pumpkin pie. I added more water, blended, added more colour until I was happy. Then I left it to dry before wiping over the whole page with a damp paper towel to remove any ink sitting on top of the embossing.

I divided up my piece of watercolor paper and although I originally planned to use various card bases, once I’d decided to add a strip of ribbon, that meant all melon mambo since I don’t have ribbon in the other two colors. So I added a piece of the 1/8 inch stitched ribbon and then a little circle with a sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms. I really like the small sentiment so that the background can shine – I adore how the colours have blended to create so many different shades and tones on the four cards.

I definitely need to try this again with more masculine colours, but I’ll give you a few days off from emboss resist and will share something different tomorrow!

Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies

This was actually a post to showcase the bermuda bay glimmer paper but it’s sold out in the US. If you’re in one of the other markets you can still get it. But let’s assume that you have some leftover – or our standard glimmer paper! I was having trouble with this particular colour glimmer paper – trying to pair it with bermuda bay card stock and it just didn’t work. The other evening, I looked at it in frustration and realised that it looks a whole lot more like island indigo. Mostly. Bingo! And it looks great with the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies - Bunch of Blossoms - Petal Burst TIEF - Layering Circles Framelits Dies

So I’ve got a bermuda bay glimmer paper dragonfly and it’s so sparkly. I put it on a piece of whisper white edged by a skinny mat of island indigo. Bermuda bay just didn’t work. The card base is thick whisper white and the entire front of it is dry embossed with the petal burst textured impressions embossing folder – this is one of the items that (at least) is available as a freebie in the UK during Sale-a-bration. Not so in the US for some reason. I then decided to use one of my current favourite sets for sentiments, Bunch of Blossoms. But here I found that island indigo didn’t work for the sentiment – too dark, even stamped off it didn’t work. Bermuda bay looked much better. I’m thoroughly confused by the bermuda bay glimmer paper, just know that you should consider both bermuda bay and island indigo if you’re using it!

I used the layering circles framelits dies to cut out the sentiment and the slightly larger scalloped one to cut out a mat from the glimmer paper. I popped that up with dimensionals. This card has been many days in the making (the bermuda bay threw me off!) and I’m finally happy with it.

Stylish Stems Framelits Dies

Today I’m sharing a quick clean and simple card but an effective one nonetheless. It pretty much made itself once I started playing with the Stylish Stems Framelits Dies and, as a bonus, I have a bunch of pieces ready cut out with other dies to play with too.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Stylish Stems Framelits Dies - Bunch of Blossoms

The Stylish Stems Framelits Dies contains some unusual pieces – there’s a die to cut out the flower itself but it leaves it in the card so it’s more peeking through to the next layer. I used another of the dies to cut the edges of my calypso coral flower creating the piece which I could layer. The stem and leaves together are another die and I cut it into the whisper white layer  before carefully layering the flower on top – lining up a piece of the flower to hide the top of the stem. The sentiment is from Bunch of Blossoms (I really love the mixed typefaces in these sentiments) and it’s in pear pizzazz – and stamped before I glued anything down. I then layered my whisper white panel onto a pear pizzazz card base.

I used the silicone mat to add tombow glue to the back of the flower. It’s a really easy way to add delicate die cuts. Just put a splodge of tombow onto the silicone mat and use a sponge dauber to pick up some glue. I then dab the dauber onto a clean part of the mat to take off the excess and then dab it onto the back of the die cut. When the dauber starts seeming to be a little sticky, I know that it’s time to add a little more glue. You need enough to stop the dauber sticking to the delicate die cut, but not so much that you get excess splodging  around it. Be careful not to move the die cut or you’ll likely get glue onto the front.

Succulent Garden DSP

Here’s the thank you card that I sent to my December customers; I appreciate all of my customers and I enjoy creating cards to send to them – along with a little extra which I’ll share tomorrow. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been rather busy at work lately so I wanted a card that would be quick and easy to mass produce. DSP is always a great choice in this situation and the designer series papers in the Occasions catalog are really gorgeous – here I’ve chosen the beautiful Succulent Garden DSP.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Succulent Garden DSP - Bunch of Blossoms - Stitched Shapes Framelits Dies - Festive TIEF

I like to have some card stock pre-cut into card base sizes so that I’m not continually popping up to cut something (it might be good for me to get up all the time though) and I cut many at a time with my large carl cutter. This saves time and saves my Stampin’ Up! trimmer blades wearing out just cutting lots of bases. So I cut a bunch of old olive bases and then the DSP into pieces of 5 1/4 inches by 4 getting 6 to a sheet. It’s fairly soothing, folding all the bases and then gluing all the DSP on.  At the next session, I stamped the sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms in sweet sugar plum and then cut it out using the stitched shapes framelits dies cranking that through the big shot at the same time as a piece of old olive and the layering ovals. Then it was a simple matter of gluing the two pieces together and popping it up with dimensionals. To finish things off, I dry embossed the envelope flap with the Festive TIEF. I love the polished look of an embossed envelope.

Blooms and Bliss DSP notepads

I was making some thank you gifts for customers last weekend and was so pleased with them, I wanted to share. I like them so much that I think they will be part of my hostess gifts this month too. I bought the notepads at Staples and then needing small patterned DSP, it was a simple decision to pull out the Blooms and Bliss DSP – I love this paper!

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Blooms and Bliss DSP - Bunch of Blossoms

The first thing to do is to measure your notepad – mine is a smidge over 5 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. The width is a smidge over 3 1/2″ inches so I cut a piece of island indigo at 6 1/2 by just over 3 1/2″ – this means that there’s a little lip at the bottom so it’s easy to open the notepad. I scored at 5 1/4″ and 5 1/2″ inches and burnished them really well to ensure that the cover stays flat. Then I cut a piece of DSP at 5 by 3 1/4″ and glued that to the cover before firmly gluing the cover onto the notepad. Make sure that you push the end of the notepad firmly into the piece of card that you’ve scored for it.

Then it’s just a matter of decorating it – I used the perfect sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms. It’s a good uplifting one to have on your little notepad to see as you jot down reminders. I stamped it in island indigo onto very vanilla and cut it out with our layering ovals, making a mat in island indigo with another of the layering framelits. An addition of some pearls and I thought I was done. In fact, I was so happy, I made other colour ways and also included the Floral Boutique DSP. Here’s an example of the three colour ways that I made.

As I kept looking at these (I told you I was happy with them!), I realised I was NOT happy when I opened the pads to see a big Staples on shiny black paper at the top. So I fixed it. I cut a piece of card at just under 1 1/4″ and scored at an inch. I glued this over the Staples panel – next time I’d do this first so that I’d get a cleaner close on the notepad. You live and learn, right?
