Paper Pumpkin September 2016 Alternate 4

I’m rather late today due to staying up late last night baking cookies for charity which then needed to be bagged up. Julia and I did this last year too and were delighted to find that last year’s September Paper Pumpkin was all about packaging. The same is somewhat true this year, so without further ado, here’s my Paper Pumpkin September 2016 Alternate number 4.

Bagging up cookies is a great way to use up retired ribbon! We decided that we needed to colour code the bags – anything with red ribbon contained peanuts. These are peanut butter cookies from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe although on most of the batch we decided to add some chocolate chunks. We of course had to test them and can report that it’s a great addition. We also made Mel’s Chocolate Chip Cookies and they got any colour ribbon that wasn’t red!

So we pooled our Paper Pumpkins and between James (Julia’s son) and me, we used up almost all the tags in the boxes (one was already used on another project). Next, after dinner kindly cooked by my brother whilst the cookies cooled, we packaged up the cookies and tied ribbon around them. The tags were punched with the smallest Stampin’ Up! hand held punch and I used the linen thread in the Paper Pumpkins to attach the tag. It was a fun night and it was for charity. And, we got to do what we love best – spend time together, baking and stamping and we’re therefore not on the roster for actually standing at the booth. Win-win.

Yesterday Stampin’ Up! posted the video for the Paper Pumpkin September 2016 kit. It’s a project kit which I know some people aren’t necessarily so fond of, but there are always ways to use the kit to make cards as alternatives. So here’s my Paper Pumpkin September 2016 third alternative; I’m having a lot of fun with the kit whilst I figure out what treats I’m putting in the tubes. The sketch at Freshly Made Sketches inspired this one.

Here’s the banner:

I turned the sketch on its side and used the banner from the Paper Pumpkin for the main element – actually it took two of them and my metal ruler to ensure that they were lined up. There are more banners in the kit than you need for the 16 tubes, and you don’t want to waste any. I cut a little strip of black and used my triple banner punch to put the flag in it. Then I used rich razzleberry for the sentiment (also from the Paper Pumpkin set) and cut that out with the layering square framelits dies. Then I cut out a basic black scalloped mat which I popped up with dimensionals. This was all put on a rich razzleberry card base but it didn’t feel quite right. A few metallic enamel shapes in silver finished the card off perfectly.

Since it’s a Sunday, I checked a couple of challenge sites who post new challenges on Sundays, before sitting down to craft and found that The Paper Players want a taste of fall. Even better, Laurie wants a clean and simple card. This challenge fits perfectly with my goal to create another paper pumpkin alternate with the Something Good To Eat kit.

Here’s the banner which inspired my card:

I used very vanilla card stock for my top layer and first stamped the pumpkin in, obviously, pumpkin pie. What else could I use?! The details on the pumpkins are in tangerine tango. The faces and stalk as well as the sentiment (all from the Something Good To Eat kit) are in old olive.

To pull out the old olive more, I trimmed 1/8 inch off two sides of my very vanilla (to 5 1/8 by 3 7/8) so that I could have an old olive mat. It’s 5 1/4 by 4 leaving a wider pumpkin pie border.

As I mentioned yesterday, the labels in the paper pumpkin kit are going to be useful for a bake sale. I’m tempted to go and create a bag to hold cookies for it now.

Firstly I’d like to thank Sam aka Pootles for selecting my card as her weekly winner – her blog is one of the few that I read each morning before I get out of bed and it was a great start to a Saturday.

When I got home from work yesterday, my Paper Pumpkin had arrived! So I got up this morning determined to make my first Paper Pumpkin September 2016 Alternate! It’s going to be very useful because soon I’ll be getting together with a friend and her son to bake cookies for a charity stall and we like to add fun labels. This set is perfect!

I quickly decided that I wanted to make a very CAS card using the “A Happy Hello to you” sentiment  along with the sunflowers. I started with black centres but eventually changed to early espresso which looked better with the delightful dijon than chocolate chip. My grid paper is now covered in an assortment of sunflowers! After all that testing on white, I changed the top layer to very vanilla because it’s warmer. I wanted to add a pop of colour and watermelon wonder fits the bill – I stamped the sentiment and then used my layering squares framelits dies to cut it out and create a little frame. The layering dies are really great for creating different sized borders. Next was the placement of the flowers – I held my sentiment in place and figured how much of the flower needed to be seen and then removed the sentiment and stamped.  I popped the sentiment up with dimensionals. Then it was a simple matter of an early espresso skinny mat (it’s 1/8 inch larger than the very vanilla piece) and a wider than usual band of the card base showing. It’s fun playing with different sized mats; admittedly because I don’t tend to have a lot of layers there’s less scope, but it’s amazing what a change of 1/8 or 1/4 inch can make.

So there’s the first Paper Pumpkin September 2016 Alternate, I’m off to go and make the second one now.
