Acorny Thank You with DSP

The challenge currently at Less is More is to make a CAS card with DSP. Clearly there still needs to be lots of white space to keep it CAS so this is quite an interesting challenge. Luckily I have loads of DSP leftover to choose from and the Acorny Thank You set and associated punch is perfect for using up small pieces.

Stampin' Up! Acorny Thank you

I used the acorn builder punch to get a variety of acorns and their tops using the Sweet Li’l Things DSP. I also punched some out in tangelo twist and watermelon wonder cardstock. Next I glued tops onto acorns, first removing the stem since that’s harder to line up. After that I stamped the sentiment (also from the Acorny Thank you set) in watermelon wonder and then started gluing my acorns to the card. I wanted to have them overlap the top and bottom of the card and I trimmed the excess with my paper snips once the glue was dry – using the card edge as a guide.

I used up some more of my DSP by using it for the envelope liner and the retiring envelope liner framelits. I still can’t believe that the liner framelits are retiring – they are the most used framelits that I own since I refuse to leave an envelope naked. I just checked the retiring list and they are still available, so if you don’t have them, I’d advise snapping them up asap.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Watercolor Wishes kit stretched

The Watercolor Wishes kit is amazing. It’s $35 for a kit that includes the supplies to make 20 cards and includes a 12 piece stamp set. I bought 20 notecards for $6 and have been busy making cards with the remnants. Or mostly remnants. Today I made a watercolor-like background using a plastic envelope and a reinker in night of navy. You could use the mini ink pad that came in the kit if that’s all you have. I dropped some night of navy ink onto the plastic and then spritzed it with water a few times. I smeared that onto some scrap paper and then onto my notecard. It produced a lovely background of a paler periwinkle type blue and if you’re missing an area, just smear it where you like. After it was dry, I added the crushed curry banner that’s leftover after you’ve made the kit and a piece of the washi tape.

Stampin' Up! Watercolor Wishes

Then I stamped the sentiment in crushed curry that is in the Watercolor Wishes kit – it’s one of 12 sentiments and the typeface is great. I cut it out with one of the (retiring) oval framelits but the next largest made too big of a frame. So I cut out the same size in crushed curry and night of navy and offset them. It definitely works – I’ll have to remember that trick. I popped the sentiment ovals up with dimensionals. Then I decided it needed just a little something and I remembered that the enamel dots from the Occasions catalogue are in crushed curry. Perfect! The envelope is lined using the retiring medium envelope framelits using the regals DSP stack.

I really like the stencils for making watercolour backgrounds but they are on the retiring list ( $3 for the happy patterns decorative masks) so I decided to go for something that doesn’t need a mask. But I’d add those $3 masks to your shopping list if I were you.

See you tomorrow,

Wildflower Fields DSP for CC&S

Here’s a use for a retired Sale-a-bration DSP which you probably still have in your stash. I know that I have plenty! Today is Thursday which means it’s a new challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches.

Stampin' Up! Wildflower Fields and Watercolor Wishes

This week Louise has chosen quite an interesting combination of colours. It definitely had me thinking for a while. Here’s the banner for the challenge – go for it, have a go with these colours.

I took one of the sheets of Wildflower Fields and used the stampin’ write markers in tempting turquoise, chocolate chip and blushing bride to colour in some of the circles. I then cut this piece on an angle and added a sentiment from the Watercolor Wishes set in tempting turquoise. I may have mentioned that I love this set – I’m so happy that it’s carrying over. I glued this piece onto the whisper white card stock.

Next I cut an envelope liner using the (retired!) envelope liner framelits and then coloured in more of the DSP (yes, as mentioned, I have loads!) with the three colours.

And there you have it. Lots of white space. No embellishments. A CAS card. My favourite type! It’s amazing what you can do with a piece of black and white DSP and a few pens.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

Garden in Bloom for CAS on Sunday

Last week when making my Design Team card for CAS Colours & Sketches, I started playing with the bee from Garden in Bloom. He didn’t make it onto that card, but I loved him and this is now the second card in a week to have at least one bee. Happily, the Garden in Bloom set is not on the retiring list so I don’t have to cram as many bees as possible into the next month! This week’s challenge as CAS on Sunday is a tic tac toe.

Stampin' Up! Garden in Bloom and Watercolor Wishes

What this means is that you choose the elements on a line in the grid and incorporate them into your card

I’d pulled out buttons and other embellishments in an attempt to try to use them up so the ribbon and button were easy and I just needed to add dry embossing. The ribbon is a piece of retired hello honey baker’s twine. I first worked on threading the thick twine through the vintage faceted designer button (40% off on the retiring list!), using tape to make a smaller stiffened end. Once I’d achieved this slightly fiddly task, I realised that the button with the twine through it was now a little wobbly. It worked much better to pull the twine out of the button and just use a glue dot to add the bow to the button! You live and learn, right?

I dry embossed a piece of very vanilla using the spring flowers folder and stamped the bees onto that. The stamping didn’t need to be perfect (and wasn’t due to the embossing) because I was going to mostly cover it. I also stamped three bees on scrap paper in archival basic black and cut out their bodies which I coloured using the hello honey stampin’ write marker. I attached the new bodies using a glue dot in the centre which allows the wings to be curled up a little – and showing the wings stamped onto the embossed layer. All that was left was a sentiment, which is from Watercolor Wishes (this hasn’t retired – phew!).

The product which is on the retiring list which confuses me, is the envelope liners framelits. I use these on a high proportion of my envelopes and there isn’t a replacement. I’m not sure what’s happening there. I would encourage you to grab it as soon as possible if you don’t already have it – it’s lovely being able to easily line envelopes. Don’t forget to use the hostess code of RJ6V9VRQ (and don’t check the no contact) so that I can send you your freebies if you spend more than $50.

I have to say that there’s some really great stuff in the new catalogue – I can’t wait for the preorder to start (on May 3).

See you tomorrow,

Party Pants meets Lighthearted Leaves

I was looking for some challenges to enter – I’ve not done many lately, I’ve been mostly focused on my cards for the Design Team at CAS Colours & Sketches. But this weekend I went looking for others and found CASology where this week it’s a cue card of DOODLE. Sounds like fun.

Stampin' Up! Party Pants and Lighthearted Leaves and Tin of Cards

Here’s the banner for the challenge:

One of my favourite recently retired sets is Lighthearted Leaves and that looks very doodled. I played around with it for a bit and then decided to pull out my so far unused Party Pants set and realised that I really like the base of my doodled leaf taking over the full stop at the end of the sentiment. I stamped both of these in the archival basic black. I added some colour with my bermuda bay Stampin’ Write marker and looked at my piece of whisper white on a bermuda bay base. I liked it, but there was something missing. I knew that I had a doodled sort of border somewhere. I started a full table scan of my stamp sets and found what I was looking for when I got to the Ts. Yes, they’re alphabetised, it’s impossible to find what you want otherwise.  Well, for me anyway! Tin of Cards has this fun border and I stamped it around the edge, masking off when necessary so that I got a good frame. I then glued my whisper white piece onto a bermuda bay card base and lined the envelope with the retired backgrounds DSP using the envelope liner framelits dies.

I was inspired by this month’s Paper Pumpkin to use bermuda bay – it apparently isn’t a colour that I use very often. I really like it, so I’m not sure why I don’t use it very much. It may appear more often in the near future. I encourage you to take a look at your cards and cardstock and pull out a colour that has been neglected. It’s quite fun.

See you tomorrow,

Liz
