Balloon Adventures

After the fun with the heat embossing and watercoloring over the past couple of days, I decided to do a set in a different color way. So I took a complete page of watercolor paper and my Balloon Adventures stamp set and stamped in versamark sprinkling on clear embossing powder as I went so that it was easier to see where I’d been.

It takes longer to emboss on watercolor paper but it warps less than regular card stock. One it was cool though, I refilled my aquapainter and starting spreading water over the paper along with daffodil delight, melon mambo and pumpkin pie. I added more water, blended, added more colour until I was happy. Then I left it to dry before wiping over the whole page with a damp paper towel to remove any ink sitting on top of the embossing.

I divided up my piece of watercolor paper and although I originally planned to use various card bases, once I’d decided to add a strip of ribbon, that meant all melon mambo since I don’t have ribbon in the other two colors. So I added a piece of the 1/8 inch stitched ribbon and then a little circle with a sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms. I really like the small sentiment so that the background can shine – I adore how the colours have blended to create so many different shades and tones on the four cards.

I definitely need to try this again with more masculine colours, but I’ll give you a few days off from emboss resist and will share something different tomorrow!

Avant Garden Emboss Resist Birthday

I can’t believe that it took me so long to start using the Avant Garden Sale-a-bration set. Now that I’ve started, apparently I can’t stop!

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden - Rose Wonder - Layering Ovals framelits dies

The background for this card is the second piece that I did when I made yesterday’s background. To remind you how I did it: I used a piece of watercolor paper for the top layer and, after using the embossing buddy, stamped the flower image from Avant Garden in versamark. It was hard to see where I’d stamped but if I held the paper at the right angle, I could just see where the versamark was so as to avoid stamping again in the same place. I sprinkled on the clear embossing powder and heated. After a little cooling time,  I used my aquapainter to add a fair amount of water to where I wanted my first colour. As with yesterday’s card I used dapper denim and then bermuda bay, adding more water before the second colour to wet the rest of the card. I went back a few times, adding more of one colour or the other and blending in places.

I used a lot of fast fuse to attach this to my bermuda bay card base, just to be sure that it was firmly in place. I found originally that watercolor paper that has been made quite wet and therefore isn’t completely flat will pull away from the card base in a day or two unless very firmly prevented. The sentiment is from Rose Wonder and I stamped it in bermuda bay onto watercolor paper so that it would match perfectly to the homemade DSP. The layering ovals framelits dies gave me a perfect oval with a matching scalloped mat. I love how the dies give such a subtle mat. To finish it off, I added a little bow using the beautiful bermuda bay 1/8 inch stitched ribbon. I don’t know why I don’t use it (and Bermuda Bay) more often.

Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies

This was actually a post to showcase the bermuda bay glimmer paper but it’s sold out in the US. If you’re in one of the other markets you can still get it. But let’s assume that you have some leftover – or our standard glimmer paper! I was having trouble with this particular colour glimmer paper – trying to pair it with bermuda bay card stock and it just didn’t work. The other evening, I looked at it in frustration and realised that it looks a whole lot more like island indigo. Mostly. Bingo! And it looks great with the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies - Bunch of Blossoms - Petal Burst TIEF - Layering Circles Framelits Dies

So I’ve got a bermuda bay glimmer paper dragonfly and it’s so sparkly. I put it on a piece of whisper white edged by a skinny mat of island indigo. Bermuda bay just didn’t work. The card base is thick whisper white and the entire front of it is dry embossed with the petal burst textured impressions embossing folder – this is one of the items that (at least) is available as a freebie in the UK during Sale-a-bration. Not so in the US for some reason. I then decided to use one of my current favourite sets for sentiments, Bunch of Blossoms. But here I found that island indigo didn’t work for the sentiment – too dark, even stamped off it didn’t work. Bermuda bay looked much better. I’m thoroughly confused by the bermuda bay glimmer paper, just know that you should consider both bermuda bay and island indigo if you’re using it!

I used the layering circles framelits dies to cut out the sentiment and the slightly larger scalloped one to cut out a mat from the glimmer paper. I popped that up with dimensionals. This card has been many days in the making (the bermuda bay threw me off!) and I’m finally happy with it.

Avant Garden Happy Birthday

I really liked the multi coloured flowers that I made about a week ago with Avant Garden and decided to have another go. This time using daffodil delight with watermelon wonder.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Avant Garden - Hello You thinlits Dies

I had a strip of whisper white card stock so that I could keep fairly straight along with my stamping but the first attempt was just too straight. So I added a bit more movement and I like how it came out. I inked up the flower stamp with daffodil delight and then added a tap with a sponge dauber inked in watermelon wonder. I then went back afterwards and added the stamens, again in watermelon wonder, after stamping off once. To add a little more shimmer, which doesn’t photograph very well at all, I also went over the stamens with a clear wink of Stella. The birthday is also from Avant Garden and the colour is the same mix of daffodil delight and watermelon wonder created the same way by dabbing watermelon wonder lightly on top of the stamp once it was inked in daffodil delight. This was actually because I made this card over a couple of days and thought I was using real red and figured that it would not look right with more muted shade of the flowers. I was also sick so I’m claiming that as the reason that my brain wasn’t working!

To finish off the card, I cut out the happy using the Hello You thinlits dies in watermelon wonder and put it on a strip of whisper white before putting my layer onto a watermelon wonder card base.

Dragonfly Dreams bundle

Mint macaron is going to be one of the colours that I really miss when it retires at the beginning of June. It took a little while to grow on me – as most in-colours do – but now I’m hooked. Don’t forget that card stock and re-inkers of the retiring in-colours are the first to go when the retiring list is announced so it’s best to get them now, before there’s a shortage. Especially since we’re still in Sale-a-bration and just stocking up on retiring goodies would probably get you to $50 and a freebie as well! The Dragonflyl Dreams bundle is a good one to get (if you don’t already own it) since Stampin’ Up! just announced that Dragonfly Dreams is one of the sets that will be in next year’s catalog. It’s safe to assume that the thinlits will still be there but not safe to assume that they’ll still be available as a bundle for a 10% discount.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Dragonfly Dreams bundle - Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies - Dragonfly Dreams

Here I took a piece of watercolor paper and did a light mint macaron wash over it and then cut it out with the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits dies. I then added the sentiment from Dragonfly Dreams onto a piece of very vanilla and cut out the same dragonflies out of the very vanilla. I added a square of the mint macaron glimmer paper (Sale-a-bration freebie) to the back of the very vanilla piece and then glued down my watercoloured dragonflies attaching them with glue dots on the bodies. I curled up the wings a little to make them seem more 3D.  Finally I poked out pieces from my diecut of the very vanilla which aren’t parts of the wings and glued them back into place.
