Beautiful Bouquet

I’ve mentioned before that I always thought that I have the creativity of a brick and thus argued with my sister that I would not be able to make cards. I was wrong of course; Caro was right – anybody can make cards with the tools given to us by Stampin’ Up!. Even if you don’t feel able to design your own cards from scratch, there is so much inspiration to start you off. But I have a thing about flowers – if I’m given a bunch, I dump them in a vase and they arrange themselves. I feel that way with stamping. I love the two and three layer stamp sets with flowers and all the beautiful framelits but I feel challenged by them. So I decided to take the bull by the horns and play with the Beautiful Bouquet bundle. It’s a little bit of a cop out – there are no flowers stamped, but the card evolved this way.

I started by stamping these sweet flowers and also cutting them out from some sweet sugarplum card stock when it occurred to me that flowers are not identically coloured. So I grabbed a piece of watercolor paper and painted various strengths of sweet sugarplum on it and left it to dry. Actually I went to bed, but you don’t have to wait quite that long! Then I diecut half a dozen or so of the blossoms and I could see the card taking shape. The stems are cut from pear pizzazz and I stamped the sentiment (also from Beautiful Bouquet) in sweet sugarplum first. Just in case.  Then it was a matter of construction. Since I was making it up as I went along, I hadn’t thought ahead and used the multipurpose adhesive sheets, so lightly dabbed some of the multipurpose glue onto the back of each die cut with a sponge dauber (on the silicone craft mat) making sure to vary the depth of colour. I also cut off single flowers and added a few where there were stem ends and also to add a little height to the bunch. I’m really thrilled with how it came out – although I know that I haven’t used the multi-step stamping on flowers yet. Baby steps, right?!

Since the blossoms were not full strength sweet sugarplum, the card looked better with a wide pear pizzazz border and just a touch of the sweet sugarplum card base showing. I really love this dusky rose – it was not my immediate favourite (that was dapper denim) but it gets used the most I think. It’s fascinating how your perception of the in colors changes as the year goes on. Except for flirty flamingo – I really don’t get on with that one! In fact, this year is the first time when I’ve really loved all five.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Eclectic Layers

I won the stamp set that coordinates with the Eclectic Layers thinlits dies at Onstage in Amsterdam and I swapped it with my sister. It just didn’t seem to be me although I did like the look of the thinlits. Until Nicki sent me a card using it recently and then the Eclectic bundle leapt onto my next order. I’m not actually using the stamp set here, although I have plans, but just the thinlits make a beautiful card.

The diamond shaped cut out is really striking – and I’m already planning to use it as a mask for stenciling and embossing paste. I cut a piece of Naturally Eclectic DSP to put behind it and that drove the choice of emerald envy for my leaf card stock. The flowers are cut each using 2 pieces from the Eclectic Layers in berry burst. There is a detailed die which cuts out the inside of the flower and then a framelit which cuts around the edge. This means that there is a lot of scope for layering with this set of dies.

My sentiment comes from Bunch of Blossoms which probably doesn’t come as a surprise to you! It’s an awesome sentiment and I also like how it looks. Win – Win!  I stamped it in more berry burst and cut it out with the stitched shapes framelits dies and popped it up with dimensionals.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Happy Birthday Thinlits Die

How awesome is the Happy Birthday Thinlits die? I wanted to make a quick birthday card and after looking at a few stamp sets, decided to go with a DSP based card and then I remembered the Happy Birthday Thinlits Die. Perfect! It’s especially perfect because of the new product, the multipurpose adhesive sheets. They make it so simple to adhere fiddly dies – just cut out a piece of the sheet, peel off the backing paper and it sticks to your card stock. Cut out the shape that you’re after and then you just peel off the other side of the backing paper and you stick down your die cut. It’s brilliant. No excess glue anywhere.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Happy Birthday Thinlits Die - Fresh Florals DSP stack

The DSP that I chose was the Fresh Florals DSP stack in lemon lime twist. I really like how this colour pops with black and the way that the half inch wide lemon lime twist border pulls your eye into the centre. I have a feeling that night of navy would be awesome too – I’ll have to give that a try.

A glue tip for you: I used to use SNAIL all the time when I started carding and then moved onto the multipurpose liquid glue. Lately I’ve gone back to SNAIL for adhering DSP, whisper white and very vanilla layers – the liquid glue sometimes leaves visible marks where it has been spread.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

Half Full

I did not intend to start teasing you with sneak peeks of the new holiday catalog, but yesterday was my brother’s birthday and of course I wanted to make him a card. My newly delivered products were on the table and before I knew it, I was playing with the Half Full stamp set! It’s crazy when I still have some unused sets from the previous order to play with.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Half Full - Beautiful You

I stamped the line of wine glasses in versamark on watercolor paper and heat embossed them with gold embossing powder. Then I squeezed a cherry cobbler ink pad and used my aquapainter to use that ink for the wine. I echoed the gold with a piece of gold foil for the border and also for the Celebrate – which is from the Beautiful You set in the annual catalog. The card base is also cherry cobbler. The photo doesn’t really do it justice – it’s very hard to make the gold embossing look realistic. There are some fun Christmas sentiments included in the Half Full set which I’ll be using next month.

Naturally Eclectic DSP

Today’s card is showcasing one of my favorite papers in the annual catalog – it comes from the Naturally Eclectic DSP. I love the combination of lemon lime twist, tranquil tide and soft sky and all done in a watercolor-like way.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Naturally Eclectic DSP - Happy Birthday Gorgeous

I took a piece of the DSP and matted it with what I thought was tranquil tide but it’s not until I was sitting down to write this that I realise it’s actually emerald envy! But it works. I wanted the panel the width of the card and rather than relying on perfect measuring, I actually had a slightly wider piece and trimmed off the excess with the trimmer after I’d glued it down to the whisper white card base. The sentiment is from Happy Birthday Gorgeous and that really is stamped in tranquil tide – and that’s also the tranquil tide 1/2 inch finely woven ribbon making the tails of the rosette. I used my favourite stitched shapes framelits to cut out the sentiment – love the stitching. I popped the sentiment up with dimensionals to give the ribbon room.
