Bookcase Builder for a girl!

I set out to make a card to welcome the baby boy that one of my coworkers is having in May. I was playing around with the little stamps in the Bookcase Builder set and somehow ended up with another card for a girl! Maybe I’ll take a break from baby cards for a bit – the set certainly isn’t only for baby cards.

I stamped some of the little stamps in various subtles colours and cut them out using the smallest square from the Stitched Shapes framelits dies. I then just arranged three of them until I liked the look ending up with blushing bride, so saffron and pear pizzazz which is how the card ended up for a girl again. So I went with it and stamped the sentiment from the same set (I love the typeface)  in blushing bride to match.

I popped up the little squares with stampin’ dimensionals which made it harder to line everything up. I used my grid paper and a couple of rulers to ensure I got the duck in the centre and then added the squares to the left and right. But although I had my rulers, it’s hard to line up because the dimensionals mean that the edges are higher than your rulers!

Designer Tin of Cards for The Paper Players

I meant to share another Bookcase Builder card today to show you how versatile it is since I’m offering it as a raffle prize to all my customers this month. However I got so excited by my early prep for a class next month that I’ve made another with the Designer Tin of Cards. I was inspired to make this one by the Paper Players challenge this week and also because the card in the box is a little too fussy for me. So yet again, I’m taking just part of the card, adding a few basics and, when I use the rest of this card’s official supplies, I’ll have made one card out of two.

Here’s the banner which inspired my card

I took the piece of DSP from the kit and selected a bright and cheerful colour to go with it. I used the DSP that this piece comes from (Affectionately Yours Specialty DSP) to help my choice of watermelon wonder. I added a skinny mat and used the Hello You thinlits dies to cut out my huge happy and then took the birthday from the Designer Tin of Cards stamp set. I could’ve also used the Crazy About You set for this, but the Designer Tin of Cards was already out!

The card needed a little something and the two smallest flowers punched out with the Blossom Bunch Punch added just the right touch along with a mint macaron enamel dot that I had leftover from, I think, the first ever pack of enamel dots that were produced in last year’s occasion’s catalogue. A rhinestone would’ve worked too but it felt good using up something from my stash. I put the flowers onto my pierce mat and pushed the back of my paper piercer into the centre to make the edges spring up a bit. You can also use one of the inserts from the clear block storage caddy. The mint macaron card base finished this off nicely with a deep border of mint macaron to set off the lovely sentiment.

Designer Tin of Cards

I have a card class on Saturday 18th March and I’m already prepping for it! I think that may be a record. The class is to make the Designer Tin of Cards project kit which consists of a tin, 16 cards and tabs to help organise them. I’m guessing you’re wondering just what there is to prep? Well it’s 4 copies of 4 cards and I decided I wanted to make a few alternatives (no surprise, I know!) in case people wanted some extra variety.

I was a bit surprised to notice that when the card is based on the Moroccan DSP, the shape to go on it is whisper white. So I’ll ensure that I have plenty of very vanilla on hand so that people can swap those out. I also decided that I didn’t want to cover up most of the patterned card and have created 2 cards out of the supplies of one with just a few extra basics.

The large patterned piece is from the kit and I added it to a delightful dijon card base. Next I laid down a strip of the kit’s washi tape folding the ends to crease it where I wanted to cut and then cutting it off. I know that washi is planned as a rough and ready tape, but I don’t like the ragged edges! I cut a little strip of Moroccan DSP to lay on top of some of the washi – in fact that little strip is where I got the delightful dijon from. To continue the colour scheme, I used delightful dijon for the sentiment from the Designer Tin of Cards stamp set (on very vanilla!) and added a layering piece of early espresso cut out using the layering squares framelits dies. I popped this up with dimensionals.

Moon Baby Watercolor

I decided to leave my stamped Moon Baby image left over from yesterday to dry overnight so that I could be certain it was really dry and ready for the aquapainter. Of course, I’ve now made two baby cards for girls and I found out this morning that one of the babies on the way is a boy. Good to have extra cards on hand, right?

I started by lightly outlining the image with the pacific point pencil to make the image pop but then decided on a blue sky. I was initially going to get darker towards the edges but I liked the watercolour effect with looks of different texture after the first round of colour and left it. I used the daffodil delight pencil for the moon and the star, calypso coral for the face and hand and then melon mambo for the clothing. It’s amazing what a bit of water can do for the colour!

I added a little border (just 1/8 inch larger all round) and used fast fuse to ensure my slightly damp watercolour paper holds fast. There are quite a few baby sentiments in the Moon Baby set but I wanted a longer less deep sentiment, if that makes sense. It was originally a surprise to me that not only do you need a sentiment to say the right thing, it needs to be in a typeface which matches your card AND it needs to be the right shape. At least, that’s how I justify buying more and more stamp sets with sentiments! Baby Bear had the perfect size and shape and meaning for my sentiment. Yesterday, I used daffodil delight as a base because that was the colour of the watercolor pencil. Today I used so saffron – I think I like this better. Which do you prefer?
