Starlight Thinlits Dies

There’s a die in the Starlight Thinlits Dies collection that is unusual and beautiful. It doesn’t cut out a shape or coordinate with a stamp, it cuts out a number of dots and other shapes and creates a gorgeous negative star.

I intended on having a larger piece but it was early and I was without coffee and I put the die at the corner of my piece of emerald envy. As I picked up my piece of silver foil to see how it looked, I realised that this wasn’t a mistake at all (!) and I could just change the card layout and it would be perfect. Next I used the versamark and the sentiment from the set which is bundled with these thinlits – the Star of Light set. I heat embossed using silver powder directly onto the card base. I find that it’s best to have the cardbase unfolded, it seems to do less warping – as does allowing the heat gun to get hot before starting.

Next I used tombow to glue my piece of emerald envy onto the silver foil and then popped that up with dimensionals. I think I’ll use this card in some of my upcoming parties – it’s nice and easy for beginners. Good for mass production too.

Jolly Friends CAS Christmas card

Another thing that I got earlier this week and I couldn’t wait to play with was Jolly Friends. I absolutely love the moose but wasn’t sure how much I’d use it but I saw some cards my sister Caro made and I just couldn’t resist. And this one is fun but easily duplicatable (a new word, but you know what I mean)

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Jolly Friends - Jolly Hat Builder Punch - Star of Light

The moose is stamped in soft suede and the hat in real red. The hat was then punched out with the jolly hat builder punch – I did warn you that I was going to be putting these adorable hats on everything! I then used some gold glimmer paper to decorate his hat – also cut out with the builder punch. The sentiment comes from the Star of Light set – this one seems to be rather useful too. I’ll try not to wear it out!

I’m not quite sure from the tracking, but I MIGHT be getting my Paper Pumpkin today in which case, there will be some alternate ideas coming up soon.

Love and Affection box

I’m making grab bag gifts for my customers that come to class and order. Those that order over $30 get to select something from the basket for free and rather than just putting the gifts in bags, I wanted to package them myself. So here’s a box that I made with undisclosed contents so that it’s a surprise to whoever picks it! I’m calling this my Love and Affection box.

Stampin' Up! Love and Affection

After measuring the proposed contents, I knew that I needed a box that is 6 1/4″ square and about 3/4″ deep. So I cut out a piece of retired DSP to 7 3/4″ square. I scored along each side at 3/4″, and cut along one side of each corner square (the red lines in the diagram). It was a simple matter of adding glue to the little flaps to make the box.

For my lid, I cut the whisper white card stock 1/8″ bigger, so 7 7/8″. At this point, I forgot what I was doing (too focused on other things rather than getting into my crafting zone!) and scored at 1/4 inch which is not right but I didn’t notice yet. Then I stamped the flowers from Love and Affection in watermelon wonder and a retired gold ink. It would have been better to have embossed in gold actually and I think I’ll do that next time. After burnishing my score lines I discovered that the box lid was too big and realised that I should’ve scored at 3/4″ as before! So I used my bone folder to make my paper flat again and then rescored at 3/4″ and burnished those. I was planning on redoing the lid but figured I’d better complete it just to be sure when I decided I actually rather like the extra detail of the score line on the lid. I finished by using some watermelon wonder ribbon from last year – and although it looks as if I used one piece of ribbon, I actually did the bow separately and attached it with a glue dot. Much easier!

Cozy Critters for CAS Colours & Sketches

Happy Thursday and welcome to another challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches. As I mentioned last week, I have hostess duties this month and this is my first ever sketch challenge. I was a bit nervous about creating a sketch, but after a little surfing I found that it was quite fun to just let go and design a sketch. I really hope that you like what I’ve come up with and join in the fun. I designed this card on Tuesday and because I’d just got a new box of supplies they feature on my card. The Cozy Critters and matching Jolly Hat Builder punch are really fun to play with and the mini jingle bell is the fun finishing touch.

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Cozy Critters - Softly Falling TIEF - Jolly Hat Builder Punch

and here’s the sketch which inspired my card

I wanted to keep the background strip fairly quiet because my owl was going to be quite busy so decided on dry embossing. I love the softly falling TIEF, it’s good for snow and champagne bubbles. Then I stamped out the tree branch in old olive and (amazingly) just snipped it out whilst I was thinking about what to do next. Next was the adorable owl who is in soft suede and I coloured in his scarf with real red. Then it was obvious he needed a santa hat. Clearly it’s cold if he has a scarf on so he needs an overly large hat – I love that it’s down to his eyes and at a somewhat jaunty angle! I first punched out the hat in real red and glued that down and then added a mini jingle bell with a glue dot but something was missing. As you’ve probably noticed, I don’t do much glitter, but the hat called for a dazzling diamonds glimmer paper brim. Perfect.

There was an issue with the preorder that meant I couldn’t get the hostess set, Cozy Critters otherwise I’d have been sharing it earlier. And now that I have the Jolly Hat builder punch, I have a feeling that santa hats are going to be turning up all over the place!

Stop over to CAS Colours & Sketches to take a look at the inspiration from the rest of the Design Team and I hope to see you in the gallery.

Blooms and Bliss DSP notepads

I was making some thank you gifts for customers last weekend and was so pleased with them, I wanted to share. I like them so much that I think they will be part of my hostess gifts this month too. I bought the notepads at Staples and then needing small patterned DSP, it was a simple decision to pull out the Blooms and Bliss DSP – I love this paper!

Liz Bailey Stampin' Up! Demonstrator - Blooms and Bliss DSP - Bunch of Blossoms

The first thing to do is to measure your notepad – mine is a smidge over 5 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. The width is a smidge over 3 1/2″ inches so I cut a piece of island indigo at 6 1/2 by just over 3 1/2″ – this means that there’s a little lip at the bottom so it’s easy to open the notepad. I scored at 5 1/4″ and 5 1/2″ inches and burnished them really well to ensure that the cover stays flat. Then I cut a piece of DSP at 5 by 3 1/4″ and glued that to the cover before firmly gluing the cover onto the notepad. Make sure that you push the end of the notepad firmly into the piece of card that you’ve scored for it.

Then it’s just a matter of decorating it – I used the perfect sentiment from Bunch of Blossoms. It’s a good uplifting one to have on your little notepad to see as you jot down reminders. I stamped it in island indigo onto very vanilla and cut it out with our layering ovals, making a mat in island indigo with another of the layering framelits. An addition of some pearls and I thought I was done. In fact, I was so happy, I made other colour ways and also included the Floral Boutique DSP. Here’s an example of the three colour ways that I made.

As I kept looking at these (I told you I was happy with them!), I realised I was NOT happy when I opened the pads to see a big Staples on shiny black paper at the top. So I fixed it. I cut a piece of card at just under 1 1/4″ and scored at an inch. I glued this over the Staples panel – next time I’d do this first so that I’d get a cleaner close on the notepad. You live and learn, right?
