Star of Light

I’ve been meaning to play with the Star of Light stamp set, but until today I somehow didn’t get around to it. Yesterday I stamped the Merry Medley large background image onto a large piece of night of navy using the copper embossing powder – presumably inspired by Friday’s card which featured the gorgeous specialty piece of embossed paper from the Petals & Paisleys DSP. I wondered about making an extra large card to use all of it, and then this morning realised what I wanted to do. I carefully cut up my stamped and embossed image on the trimmer into individual sentiments. Now I have a pile of ready stamped and embossed sentiments to play with. Perfect!

This felt like the perfect time to use the Star of Light set, having the stars and swooshes just bursting out from the sentiment. I stamped in night of navy and then lamented the lack of any copper embellishments when I realised that I can get the same effect with more embossing. Hence the added copper stars, also from Star of Light, to pull the card together.

I used a variety of adhesives on this one – fuse on the whisper white card since it had warped a little, snail to attach the night of navy to the copper foil since tombow slides too much and then dimensionals to pop up the sentiment. I do like having a variety of adhesives, it makes life so much easier.

I happened to put the last two days cards next to each other and noticed that they are identical in layout. Did you notice? I think it’s amazing how changes in colour and patterns make them look so different!

This upcoming Saturday is National Card Making Day; I’m planning a Christmas Card buffet on Sunday afternoon (the 2nd October). A buffet is where there are a number of cards and you choose which ones you want to make and how many of them. If you’re local and are interested, let me know.

See you tomorrow,

Liz

This Christmas specialty DSP

I got started a little late this morning – my father is staying and that seems to cause late nights of playing pool and talking. No complaints, it’s wonderful having him here but finding carding time is harder. I decided to use some DSP and pulled out an as yet unused pack – This Christmas specialty DSP. It’s a different pack in that the paper is a little thinner than usual but you get double the sheets. So 24 12″ by 12″ sheets for only $13. They are double sided with one side more focused towards the holidays and the other just fun patterns (and one of them is sheet music – I’m tempted to get my violin out and see what it is!).

I really like this paper because it’s got very vanilla in it rather than whisper white which makes it feel much warmer. I pulled out one of the more holiday patterns and cut a piece at 4 3/4″ by 3 1/2″. I cut a piece of very vanilla 1/8″ larger for a thin mat and then put that onto my cherry cobbler card base. I really like the pattern, but I wanted a wide plain border to calm it down a trifle.

I really wanted to use my copper embossing powder and as I pulled out Christmas Pines and the big Noel it occurred to me that the gold embossing powder is going to be neglected this year. Until I found that the copper doesn’t really go with the cherry cobbler – it’s got a hint of pinkness to it which just doesn’t work. So out came the gold embossing powder. And that was perfect. I cropped it with the layering ovals framelits dies adding a mat of cherry cobbler and popped that part up with dimensionals.

If you’re planning on making a lot of Christmas cards, the This Christmas specialty DSP is tremendous value. If you use the amount that I did today, you’d have enough in the pack for 144 cards.

See you tomorrow (a little earlier!)

Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP

Stop hoarding your DSP and especially the metallic specialty papers. I decided to pull out the absolutely gorgeous piece of the Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP and make a card. And I can’t stop looking at it. It’s so beautiful. It looks even better in real life, so make your own so that you can admire the true beauty of this one.

I wanted a large border of night of navy (which matches the DSP) to give some semblance of quiet to the rather busy card. But don’t you love the copper? I cut a piece of copper foil sheets to frame the DSP and I love it! I continued the copper theme by embossing the sentiment from Watercolor Wishes onto very vanilla card stock (don’t forget the embossing buddy) and then cut it out using the layering oval framelits dies. I then cut out a scalloped oval using the same dies from the centre of the copper foil that I used on this card – you can’t tell, so why not?! Then it was a simple matter of construction – I used snail to adhere card on to the top of the copper because it’s slippery and then I popped up the sentiment piece on dimensionals.

I really adore the Petals and Paisleys Specialty DSP and am determined to use all of this single piece of embossed paper. There’s no point having it in your files, doing nothing until it retires. Just get it out and cut it up and share it!

Flourish CAS Colours & Sketches

It’s Thursday which means it’s time for another challenge at CAS Colours & Sketches and yes, the challenges there should flourish! How about this week you have a go at the challenge yourself? It would be great to see you in the gallery. This week it’s a sketch challenge where Karen wants to see some layering. I chose to go pretty minimalistic so that I could follow the layering of the sketch plus add some embellishments but remain ultra clean and simple.

Stampin' Up! Flourish thinlits and Watercolor Wishes

Here’s the sketch which inspired my card:

The flower was cut out with the Flourish thinlits in sweet sugarplum card stock; next I stamped the sentiment in the same ink onto a scrap of very vanilla which I cropped with one of the layering squares framelits dies. Yes, I could just cut the square myself using the trimmer but it’s so much simpler with the dies! That done, I held the square over the flowers and got them where I wanted them before using the two way glue pen to glue them permanently. The hello square is popped up on dimensionals hiding the stalks. For a final touch, I got out the enamel shapes in the in colours and added four to the buds. It’s probably the first time that I’ve added an even number of them!

Paper Pumpkin September 2016

Yesterday Stampin’ Up! posted the video for the Paper Pumpkin September 2016 kit. It’s a project kit which I know some people aren’t necessarily so fond of, but there are always ways to use the kit to make cards as alternatives. I’ve already posted three ideas for alternatives which you can see here, here and here, or just scroll down a couple of days. Here’s the official video:

I love getting my monthly red box in the mail, it’s such fun opening it! And on the occasions where I don’t care for the project’s intended use, there’s the added fun of trying to use all the components in a different way.
