Sweetbriar Rose

I originally overlooked the Sweetbriar Rose set in this year’s catalogue, mostly because single stamps can be hard to use in multiple ways, but I’m really enjoying watercolouring and this set screams out for that. I decided to give my red hot greetings thinlits dies are chance to cool down on whilst making this one.

Stampin' Up! Sweetbriar Rose

I made this card back in July at the crop and at that point I didn’t have the archival basic black so I used stazon. It definitely doesn’t give as clean an image as the newer ink, plus it’s harder to get off the stamps – especially when you go to the crop without your stampin’ scrub. I won’t do that again! I used blushing bride and my aquapainter to colour the leaves, starting with a very pale wash of colour and then adding more. I haven’t mastered watercolouring (mastery of anything allegedly takes 10,000 hours so I’m a long way off!) but I really enjoy doing it. The leaves are in wild wasabi, again starting with a pale wash and then going back to darken the stems. I believe that the middles of the flowers are so saffron but it’s hard to be sure 3 months later! I then did a faint outline around the image – wild wasabi around the flowers and blushing bride around the leaves to make the image stand out more.

I matted my piece of watercolour paper with a thin amount of wild wasabi and mounted that on a blushing bride card base leaving a large border of blushing bride. The envelope is lined with the old backgrounds DSP which was cut out using the envelope liners framelits. I’m still working through my retired stash of this paper.

See you tomorrow,

Lighthearted Leaves for a challenge

I seem to be entering a lot of challenges this week and today it’s TGIF Challenges where it’s a colour challenge.

Stampin' Up! Lighthearted Leaves and Greetings Thinlits

Here’s the banner which inspired my card:

Definitely fall colours. I used a leaf stamp from Lighthearted Leaves which I seem to be using a lot at the moment – I’m working my way around the set! I stamped it in the three colours onto a very vanilla background. I wasn’t sure which colour to use for the sentiment and so cut out a thanks with the Greetings Thinlits dies in all three colours and tried them all! In the end, I decided to go 3-D and layers the old olive on top of the rich razzleberry – I’m really happy that I have the fine tip glue pen to help me with adhering the thinlits. I then mimicked the shadowing effect of the rich razzleberry by having a very thin mat of rich razzleberry behind the very vanilla and putting this onto an old olive card base.

I had visitors over the weekend and they looked at all my stuff, especially the ribbon and they commented that surely I have more ribbon. I don’t. Because I hardly ever use it, I much prefer the clean and simple style card. But maybe I should use some ribbon soon. I’ll take it as a challenge.

Last, but definitely not least, a welcome to my new blog follower. I’m glad to have you join the fun!

See you tomorrow,

Lighthearted Leaves and Holly Jolly Greetings

I didn’t intend to make a Christmas card, but when looking for a sentiment to fill a corner, the JOY is what worked. So it became a joyful card and probably a Christmas one in very untraditional colours.

Stampin' Up! Lighthearted Leaves and Holly Jolly Greeting

I stamped the leaves from the Lighthearted Leaves set (one of my favourites currently) in the archival basic black ink – this great ink has meant that my previous favourite, memento ink, is gathering dust. I coloured in the leaves using Stampin’ Write markers in pear pizzazz and rich razzleberry. I didn’t colour perfectly, thinking that a little flash of white here and there made sense with the roughly drawn image. Something else was needed so I looked at a few sets for a small sentiment, Holly Jolly Greetings was on the table and JOY fit. I’ve stamped that in rich razzleberry.

A skinny mat of yet more rich razzleberry before mounting that on to a base of pear pizzazz and my clean and simple and, in my opinion, effective card is complete.

See you tomorrow,

Sleigh Ride Edgelits again

I had a productive weekend and made cards for a couple of challenges. I suppose it’s fairly inevitable that there will be similarities since I’m not good at putting everything away after making the first card. So this card also uses the sleigh ride edgelits. It’s for the CAS Colours & Sketches challenge.

And here’s the banner which inspired my card:

I actually already had the night of navy buildings cut out; I’d been toying with using them for my brother’s birthday card back in August and since I didn’t, they were on my pile of things to use later. I wanted to put gold foil behind the doors and windows and realised that I only needed to attach the foil enough that it didn’t move before I stuck down the night of navy piece. So there are little strips of gold foil which are a fair bit longer than necessary so that I could glue them in place far enough away from the openings such that I wouldn’t have to worry about glue showing. I then turned it over carefully and glued it down to the soft sky card base. I stamped the Christmas sentiment in night of navy – it’s from the Holly Jolly Greetings set. Then I cut out the merry from more gold foil using the Christmas Greetings Thinlits and stuck it down using the fine tip glue pen. It’s a lot easier to use this than anything I’ve tried previously.

See you tomorrow,

Wonderland

I really like the colours chosen for this week’s challenge by the Pals Paper Arts but I’m surprised that I ended up with a Christmas card – it wasn’t my intent but the card evolved in its own direction as often seems to happen.

Stampin' Up! Wonderland and Sleigh Ride Edgelits

Here’s the banner that was the inspirationPPA270

I started by cutting out the trees in Always Artichoke using the Sleigh Ride Edgelits. I originally planned use the silent night from the Jingle all the Way set – the curve fits perfectly with the curve cut  by the framelits. But then there was just too much bare expanse of sahara sand. I couldn’t see making any stars with the available colour choices so turned to the Wonderland stamp set. I stamped both sentiments in blackberry bliss – and amazed myself by remembering to do this before I popped up the always artichoke piece. I even cut little pieces of dimensionals to put behind the trees. I then mounted this on a blackberry bliss card base. It’s an ultra clean card and I’m really happy with it.

See you tomorrow,
