Sheltering Tree for the Paper Players

I’ve been participating in a lot of challenges this week; it really is a lot of fun to take a specific set of colours and see what you can make with them. Today I’m using the colour challenge from the Paper Players. This week there are four colours which can make things a little more tricky, but with my current, let’s call it, attachment to the Stampin’ Up! Sheltering Tree set, I knew what I wanted to do.

Stampin' Up! Sheltering Tree

And here’s the challenge banner

I started by stamping the tree in crumb cake on a crumb cake piece of card stock and then added the leaves in so saffron. I then used the little flower head stamp and crisp cantaloupe to add more of an autumnal look. I stamped the grass bank in wild wasabi and stayed with the muted look for the sentiment by stamping it in crumb cake. Since the inks look a bit different on crumb cake than on white, the only mat that worked was the so saffron; the others seemed to be totally different colours! So there’s a skinny mat of 1/16 inch of so saffron. I mounted this on a crumb cake card base. For a change, rather than lining the envelope I decided to dry emboss the flap. It was really easy with my newly acquired texture boutique. It’s less bulky than the big shot and you don’t have to change plates. I don’t know about you, but every time I want to use my big shot, I seem to have to change between cutting and embossing! I used the retired pretty print embossing folder.

Lotus Blossom for a class

Here’s one of the cards that I did for a recent class. Once they got the hang of lining up the arrows on the Stampin’ Up! Lotus Blossom set, they loved it. The three images of the flower each have an arrow (that doesn’t appear when you stamp) that you point in the same direction on each stamp to help with lining up the image. This set is only available through the end of March – it’s one of the freebies during Sale-a-bration.

We stamped the first (smallest and most detailed image) in lost lagoon and used the same ink for the second image, but we stamped off once first. The third image is stamped in pool party. We used pear pizzazz for the stalk – full strength for the partial image and stamped off once for the second image. Once that was done to our satisfaction (extra card stock may possibly have been sacrificed here!), we used the embossing buddy to remove any static and then stamped the sentiment from Work of Art in versamark. They of course loved watching the gold come to life under the heat tool. Who wouldn’t? The piece of very vanilla was then mounted on a piece of pear pizzazz and then put onto a card base of lost lagoon with stampin’ dimensionals. The card is a 4.25″ square. So we used the envelope punch board to make an envelope for a 4.5″ square card (a little extra room for the dimensionals), starting with a 7.5″ square of lost lagoon. They were surprised at how easy it is to make custom sized envelopes – I believe that there are measurements for 66 different sizes of envelopes on this handy tool. That’s pretty impressive for a tool that costs under $20.

Bright Blossoms for Fab Friday Challenge

No, it’s not Friday, sorry. But this challenge was set by the Fab Friday Challenge blog and it took me a few days to create a card with these colours. After playing around with numerous stamp sets, I went super simple and finally inked up the Bright Blossoms set which I picked up from the clearance rack a couple of months ago. Although it looks simple, it required a pencil and eraser in addition to my usual ruler in order to get everything lined up.

The challenge banner that inspired this card is

I started by stamping the calypso coral vase in the centre of the long side and then placed the blushing bride one next to it. I then had to measure the distance between then and ensure it was the same distance between the hello honey and calypso coral. I then added the scoring around each edge and glued the card to a calypso coral base. The envelope is lined in the backgrounds DSP from the subtles family in calypso coral.

A Corner Garden on vellum

In my recent order, courtesy of the Bingo winnings at the crop weekend, I received the large background stamp set, Corner Garden. I sat down and started colouring (again!) but didn’t like my colour choices and abandoned it. Instead of beginning again, I started playing around with vellum and decided to see if it’s possible to heat emboss on it. Apparently, it is.

I heat embossed it with the white embossing powder and then decided against adding a sentiment. I like the wide open space. This of course created an issue with how to attach the vellum to the card since (apparently) any glue will show through. The mini brads seemed like the perfect solution – and this is the first time that I’ve used them.

I don’t have a dedicated piercing mat for piercing (mine is used to get better images when stamping with photopolymers), but I do have the clear block caddy. This comes with foam very much like the piercing mat inserted in each of the spaces for the blocks. Obviously you need to remove those to put the blocks in the caddy and so I use the largest piece as a piercing mat. So I used this and the piercing tool to make the holes in each corner for the mini brads. I then cut a piece of strawberry slush the same size as the vellum and attached the two together since I didn’t want to see the back of the brads from the inside of the card. I then taped down the back of the mini brads. This was then glued to a strawberry slush base.

I don’t have the backgrounds DSP for the 2013 in colours, but I do have a few packs of the Sale-a-bration Irresistably Yours DSP. I cut a piece to fit over the envelope flap and then sponged it with strawberry slush. I really love this paper, it’s so versatile.

A dozen thoughts for the Pals challenge

This week the challenge at the Pals Paper Arts is a colour one, my favourite kind of challenge.

Stampin' Up! Bright and Beautiful and A Dozen Thoughts

Here’s the challenge banner which inspired this card

I had the A Dozen Thoughts set out for the previous card that I was creating and noticed the Wish Big sentiment. I really love the typeface and decided to use it on this card. And then the whole Disney “wish upon a star” idea occurred to me and the card developed from there.

I stamped the middle sized star from the Bright and Beautiful set in versamark onto the garden green card stock before sprinkling over the gold embossing powder and heating it. I then did the same for the sentiment. I mounted this card onto a piece of basic black which is 3/16 inch larger in both dimensions thus giving a border of 3/32 inch around the green. I mounted this onto the garden green card base; there’s a border of half an inch of garden green around the basic black. I finished by lining the envelope using the Backgrounds DSP from the Regals family in garden green.
